Mary's Loop 1, Time ATAC 0

1123 Views 12 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  lidarman

Had started the day on Moore Fun and then rode out Mary's and did Horse Thief. On the way back out Mary's I was hauling ass trying to catch my friend. Came blasting out of the last really rocky section right before the dirt when I saw the rock in the middle of the trail. I was heading right for it but missed it with the front wheel and thought I was in the clear when I made contact with the pedal. Smashed it right in two.

Ouch, nice carnage...I'd recommend the Crank Bros Mallet's since your going to be shopping for new pedals.
Over or around...... don't hit the rocks. :D
I've seen that happen before, suc-ks, 959's take a licking and keep on clicking<s. 959's=""></s.>
Nice Carnage!!!! Looks like those ATAC's were ready for retirement anyhow... glad it wasn't your toe that took the impact! Ouch.

Yup. I've seen bike parts break too - including 959's. ATAC's have worked for years and years for me reliably and sturdily. Oh, and weigh a lot less than 959's, oh - and don't gunk up in the wet/clay/sandy crud around here instantly like 959's do.

:)
I always thought that could happen with ATACs but it is the first time I have seen it.

I did the exact same thing to a pair of mine this summer. Going fast downhill and trying to pedal through a bunch of rocks.

Can't complain though. They had a nice life of 5 years or so.

What was more fun was the 8 miles of descending I still had to do. If you flip it so that the toe side clip is up, you can get the illusion that your foot is attached........only to be proven wrong at a high rate of speed of course.
its funny but in that pic the part that you're holding looks almost exactly like an eggbeater...

Yeah right!!!

959's have their little teeth break off...not to mention the fact they clog like mad!

our 10 pairs of atacs have been going on 5 years and about 10k miles with not one issue..he must have hit that rock HARD!
it's hard to tell from the pic, is that an ATAC Carbon?

Well, all I know for sure is that I've slammed my ATACs into more than a few rocks in the manner described over the years and so far they have survived without suffering that sort of failure (though the carbon outer shell definitely has some scars to show for it these days...).
Not a Carbon just the standard ATAC. I think it was about 5 years old.
I've hit them on lots of rocks I think it was just a perfect impact.

I was just glad I was able to stay upright and that I didn't catch my foot.

That was just the first day in Fruita too. My buddy brought two bikes and I finished out the weekend on his Time Z's
mary who?

..and I would recommend NOT any eggbeaters product...unless you like inconsistent engagment and lots and lots and lots and lots of cleat wear.
