Thanks!

you know, the pass you need to get from the USMC @ Miramar to ride that trail at Sycamore? I have been off grid but want to ride there again. I see people ridkng there a lot and they tell me they don't even get a pass but I presume one is required.
AFAIK there is no pass required for Martha's Grove, or for any part of Sycamore Canyon / Goodan Ranch north of the where the Ridge Trail (coming down from the top of Cardiac / Sycamore Park Dr. parking) hits the bottom of the canyon near the Goodan Ranch south gate.

Now if you want to ride the canyon south of there down to Santee, on the Stowe Trail, that's MCAS Miramar property and you need a pass from the Marines. This requires some forms to fill out and a bit of time spent at the base & decal office on base, east gate off Miramar Way. Last time I was there, I was in & out in 15 minutes.

I'll come back later and post the links to the forms. Funny enough, I was planning to go renew my pass tomorrow.

EDIT: PDF forms are here. There are instructions on that page but I don't believe you'll need to wait 10 days. Note that you'll need to bring some identification docs, with acceptable choices listed on the application form pg. 3. I'm pretty sure you can leave sections 26, 27 & 28 blank.

I'll confirm as well that the Sycamore Canyon/Goodan Ranch open space preserve where Martha's Grove is does not require any kind of pass/permit since it is a San Diego County park. If you park at either the Poway or Lakeside staging area and ride within the preserve, you're fine. However, a roughly 2 mile section of the Stowe trail that runs between the preserve and Santee crosses MCAS Miramar property and that does require a permit. If you plan to ride that, I strongly second The One Ring's recommendation to get the permit and make sure you have it in your possession if you're riding the Stowe trail.

You are thinking of the Stowe Trail at the southern border of the area. Details here: Stowe Trail Alignment - San Diego Mountain Biking Association

FYI, enforcement of the stowe trail has been ramped up over the past 1.5 years or so, so I'd definitely get the permit if you plan to ride it.
