Mammoth this weekend

Is anyone going up to Mammoth this weekend? I will be up there Friday through Sunday and am looking to get some riding in. I would like to do Rock Creek if I can find someone to shuttle with. I'm sure I will ride at the park to.

Starting Friday (7/14), 40 miles of trails will be open with top-to-bottom access. Intermediate and Expert riders will be able to take the Panorama Gondola to the top of the mountain and ride down on Off the Top and Kamikaze.
Easier trails now open - Uptown, Downtown
Intermediate trails now open - Paper Route, Big Ring, Timber Ridge, Juniper, Lakes Trail (The second part of Lakes Trail after the Juniper intersection is closed due to a washed-out bridge. For your own safety, please stay out of this section.)
Intermediate trails opening Friday - Off the Top (to Kamikaze)
Expert trails now open - Lower Velocity, Shotgun, Lower Bullet, Lower Follow Me
Expert trails opening Friday - Kamikaze, Shock Treatment, Chainsmoke
Kamikaze Park opens Friday with the Dragon, planter box and dirt jumps.
Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is open 9am to 6pm daily. Get Bike and Scenic Gondola tickets at the Adventure Center or at the Mammoth Mart in the Village.
Uphill access - Bike Park Shuttle runs from the Village to the Adventure Center from 9am to 5:30pm every half hour. Gondola access for intermediate and expert mountain bikers will be available to the top starting Friday - THERE IS NO EASY OR INTERMEDIATE WAY DOWN from McCoy Station or the top.
Mountain bike lessons for all levels - daily from 10am-noon or 2-4pm. No advance reservation necessary - sign up at the Adventure Center.
Hiking trails on Mammoth Mountain remain closed until further notice. Top of the Sierra Tours are held Thursday through Sunday at 11am and 1pm.

Went to mammoth on Saturday b/c of the fires surrounding Big Bear, did a day trip with some buddies and it wasn't bad. There is still quite a bit of snow, the Top is open but the best trail (imo) Skid Marks was closed which blocked out most of the access to the other fun trails on that side. Off the Top to kamikazee was open but things like beach cruiser and some others were closed. I figure another 3 weeks and everything should be open... hopefully.

Hey Munkyspank,

Im planning a trip to Mammoth over the Aug 4-6th weekend and wondering what type of temperatures to expect during the day? pants long sleeve jersey weather or shorts short sleeve etc. I know theres still alot of snow up there so its probably on the chill side at night im sure and planning on camping, so just trying to find out what to expect having never been there before any help is appreciated.

Overall the temps were very mild, very cool at the top and warming up as you go down to the base. I wore full pads arms, leg and chest and I didn't feel hot at all. If you are camping bring warm clothing as the temps at night can get pretty cool.

I'm going to mammoth for atleast a week and was wondering if it is cheaper to camp farther away from the mountain and make a drive in to ride or does it matter?

I've never camped there so I couldn't tell you about cost, but once you are in the area getting to the Resort shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes drive time so if its significantly cheaper to camp away from the Resort I say do it.

How was your mammoth trip jfsh?? The Plunge was incredible!!!

I think most of the camping around Mammoth is in Inyo National Forest campgrounds. Here's a link.

Scroll down the page and you'll find the campground lists for Mammoth Village and Mammoth Lakes. I noticed that a lot of the campgrounds in this region don't take reservations, which can be good if you are trying to be spontaneous, but frustrating if they are all full.

Both Deadman campground and Glass creek areas have FREE camping and it's only a couple miles north of Mammoth on the 395....heck one could even ride into Mammoth from Deadman's.

Most of the time I hit these or other BLM areas as it's free and open camping.

BLM is the Bureau of Land Management - which in some areas allows for open camping.
on their land.

Mammoth trip

Glad to hear you had a good time. It is hard not to on that trail.
I had a good time in Mammoth. I went there to work on our house first and ride second. We got a crapload done on the house and I got to ride Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. The mountain was not crowded. The trails that were open were good. Not much above the main lodge was a go. From the mid you could only ride Lower Velocity and Chainsmoke. Breakthrough was still snowed in. That really limits what you can hit on the lower mountain. Most of the trails down by the Hut were open but you had to ride paper route all the way across the mountain to get to them. I'm sure it will look better by Aug 3. I will be up that weekend as well. Hopefully I will be able to do a few runs with you guys.

Additional Trails Opening Friday, July 21
Intermediate: Lakes Trail (entire trail), Off the Top (entire trail to Beach Cruiser), Beach Cruiser, Brake Through
Expert: Bullet (entire trial), Follow Me (entire trail), Flow, Pipeline
Also opening on Friday, July 21 - several hiking trails including the Mammoth Mountain Trail from the top, the Main Lodge Trail from McCoy Station, and the Twin Lakes Trail from the top - please note, for the Twin Lakes trail you need to arrange transportation from Twin Lakes back to your vehicle at the Adventure Center.

riding close to glass creek is not too bad. you can ride up to Dead Man's road and got to Dead-Man's campground or turn left before that and got for a 2.5 mile ride up to the Scenic Loop or on the Inyo Craters (i think that's what it's called) loop. also, if you camp north of the creek, there are some good on-the-water spots. another challenging but fun ride is a steep road that is off to the right after you cross the bridge over the creek to the other side of the campground. it is insane going down especially if your bike is a descender. also, grab a map (i think from the visitor center by Old Shady Rest in the town) and there are quite a few designated trails around with varying levels of difficulty and lengths. then when it gets cooler, you can come on down south to Ridgecrest, and park in the dirt parking lot above the college at the top of College Heights Boulevard. i must say i like the riding arpund here and up at Mammoth.

how far is the drive from either glass creek or deadmans to the base of mammoth mountain?

it's about 6-7 miles to the turnoff into mammoth lakes, then i would say another 4-5 to the parking garages at the Lodge where you can pick up a shuttle. i'm going in august so hopefully the snow will be gone. i went in mid-june and downtown was barely open. there was a TON of snow up there. most of the slopes were covered and there were skiers there.
