Mammoth Mt. Bike Rental info wanted . . .

Anybody got the 411 on which shops have what models and rates?

Who's got the best demo's (as in models to demo, not Demo 9's) and who's got Demo 9s to rent?

Anybody know who's got what and for how much?

Anybody got good ride photos from Mammoth? (other than the ones we've already seen)

My buddy's in Mammoth right now, and scoped out DH rentals for us to use later this week. The lodge/shop at the base of the Gondola has mostly K2 rigs, $50/day, no super aggressive DH bikes or they're set to minimum travel. There's a shop in town that rents also (at least one shop), but I haven't heard on that one yet.

Of course, you can call the bike shop at the lodge and reserve a particular bike.

Why not just buy the Demo 9 at SuperGo, ride it for the weekend, wash and clean it, then return it? Just like a nice dress from Nordstrom, or underwear at Target...

What a great idea, boy am I glad you came up with that one, yea, that will work! Never mind that after a few runs down the Mountain the bike would show rock chips, chain slap, bash ring damage and generally just "look like it's been riden more than in the parking lot"

Sure, just send me the 4 grand and I'll do it!

Also, SuperGo's return policy is not such that you could get your money back, just a store credit on a purchase as large as that.

Overall, thanks for the info. (I sure hope you were joking about the buy and return thing, 'cause if you think it would really work, pass the crackpipe on bud, its starting to take effect . . . )

So much cynicism... Dude, I've been "buying", returning and trading bikes at SuperGo all year! It's awesome. I started with an Epic, returned it for a BigHit, then a Tomac, then a Burner, then a Demo 9, and now I'm on a 5-Spot. You want some crack? The first one's free.

My buddy just called: Velocity still has some snow in spots up top, Off the Top is the pumice-loaded bummer is usually is, Skid Marks to Lincoln Express is excellent and Bullit is in great shape. He said more but it didn't all sink in.

I understand you can rent any type at Footloose Sports, XC on up to hardcore downhill.

I was up there a few weeks ago and footloose has VP-Frees and Bullits w/ slider+'s for $65.00 a day. and Mammoth Sporting goods has Stabs and geminis and one other bike for $60.00 a day. If you come out race the VC series DH or XC race and your entered into a raffle at the end of the race and you can win 1 day rentals( thats what I did) If you want more info PM me

Yes, I'm hip to Footloose . . .

last year they had bullits for rent so it makes sense that this year they would have the free's they were always a Santa Cruz shop. I might like to ride the VPP Free just to see how nice it is.

Being a "crusty old dude" and a total beginner as far as downhill racing goes, I might just be someone for all the "kids" to laugh at on the course.

I would like to ride something nice with a 7 or 8 inch travel fork and slack headangle for compairison. (I know what it's like on a 6 x 5 bike with a slightly slack HA and some of the steeps and drops can be pretty sketchy) I want to get into more rough technical riding, rock gardens and resort downhilling. I was looking at getting a 04' bighit expert, but couldn't find one in my size (I think I want a large) so now I'm looking at a deal on a closeout 04' or maybe even an 05' and if it's in "the cards" maybe a demo 9 (drool, slurp)

So, if I could rent and try out one of those bikes it would be the best "try before you buy" kinda deal.

I don't want to get into a size thing, (just buy a med and be happy ain't gonna work) so let's just say I need a large and put that one to rest.

Someone has to explain that "buy, ride, return" deal at SuperGo, how the hell you gonna get away with that one?

Also I can't find the size I want to try out before I plunk down my hard earned cash, and If I get too big, I'm hosed, and too small and I'm hosed, so what's a guy to do?

It's a joke.

Actually, "The Trek Store" does have a 30-day "trade it back" policy, and my buddy rode a Liquid hard, then swapped it for a brand new Sugar, but the reference to SuperGo was in jest.

Just in case...

Call the rental shop and ask them what the credit card requirement is.

Most shops will get an authorization on your card for the full replacement cost of the bike you want to rent. If your card can't clear the auth amount, then they will not rent. Not all shops do this, but most do.

I've been in shops and have seen the sad faces on dudes who didn't know and had credit cards that couldn't cover.

Some of these folks made longass road trips too.

I don't think it will be an issue, 'cause I pay off all my cards so they have the capacity to cover it. But, again good info to know. I am making a long road trip (coming from Phoenix, AZ) but I'll be bringing my Mt. Cycle San Andreas DHS for riding duties, it fits the bill ok, (single crown fork works for the switchbacks and a little lighter for the rough XC sections) but I'm looking for some bigger thrills on some of the more DH oriented trails. What I would like would be to find a nice large 04' bighit expert on sale some place up there, or even maybe a killer deal on a nice Demo 9 pro (hey a guy can dream can't he)

Anybody got the phone numbers for Footloose (on the main road, old mammoth hwy I think) and that other shop across from Von's plaza? (I don't know what it's called) or any other shops that carry mid-level to higher end "downhill" style bikes?

I just got off the phone with footloose . . .

and it seems all they have (that is still working) are XC type bikes and bighit comps with Dirt Jumper front forks, not what I'm looking forhttp://forums.mtbr.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=328780# I'll be up there end of August begining of Sept. if anyone wants to ride together.

Also anyone know of any other shops in town where I could get a good deal on a nice Demo rental or even stocks more "high-end" downhill stuff?

go to Footloose sporting goods they have got some good deals on Bullits and stuff like that.
