Maitenance on the Skareb.

I'm curious to hear what some other people use in their skareb for the air piston in regards to oil. I know the manual suggest motor oil. I've also heard that rock shox redrum works well. However, I'm slow to use motor oil, because I know they quite have a seal swelling quality. Anyway, so I was wondering if anyone else has tried this, and how often do you do this? Also, what weight of oil do you use?

I use the same oil I use for the semi-bath.

For the semi-bath they call for 5w-40 fully synthetic motor oil (I picked up some Amzoil) and for the top of the air piston, they call for 40wt motor oil.... Seems dumb to me to differentiate. I just use the synthetic on top of the air piston as well.

Have you noticed any problems with swelling of the piston or anything like that. I know alot of oils come with seal swellers that might have a bad affect, have you noticed this? Any significant changes in performance?
No. No problems.

I thought it was weird a couple of years ago when I first saw the Manitou instructions for putting motor oil on top of the air pistons for the Black forks. They must have some reason for choosing motor oil instead of a heavy fork oil. I just took it a step further and figured that if standard motor oil is good, synthetic is probably better....

I have always used 5-50 motor oil on my Mars and haven't had any problems with it. In 3 years I've never had to add air except after I deliberately let it out for maintenance.
You raise a good point, possibly they want that seal swelling property that many automotive properties. You raise a good point. Thanks for all the responses though, they are much appreciated.
