M960 Rings: Shimano v BlackSpire

1041 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  amillmtb
Hi, sorry if this is a repeat post. I've searched the forum and did not find an answer to my question.

I've seen posted weights for the M960 Blackspire chainrings, but cannot find any for Shimano's. The "Weight Weenie" website was not conclusive.

Does anyone know if the Blackspire rings are heavier than the Shimano's. At shop cost the difference will only be $30, so the money difference isn't a huge issue.

The blackspire's were heavier, by how much I can't remember. They also lasted more than 1 muddy ride too
Thanks for the response...I've heard from many sources that the XTR's wear out fast, but nothing specific. It sounds like you had problems with them...details?
i have a new middle, granny and guard that i can throw on a scale for you. i will post the weights tonight.
The Blackspire rings are as follows
Granny - 28 grams
Middle - 46 grams
and guard - 80 grams

There's also the Middleburn rings.

I didn't get the 960 cranks until a year after they'd been released. In that time plenty of my racing mates has been through a few middle and large rings. There was no choice in those days, as the Blackspire's hadn't been released - you HAD to go with the 'cheese' rings

Since this is the weight weenies forum...I would say go XTR or custom.
