Lower back pain

Is there a cure?
Do I need a backyottame?

Symptoms-burning/muscle ache right above tailbone.
Worst when I'm at work sitting in a crappy little chair mass produced for the average
American worker, which at 6'3" 215# is not me.
Doesnt really bother me while I ride now that I have a frame that really fits.

Just kills me in the car, in the office, on the couch, anywhere sitting is required.
So what are my options?
Do I need some kind of orthropedic chair?
Will my insurance pay for it?
I would love to get one of those recaro racing seats for my truck.....

i have suffered from back problems forever and i would say go see an orthopedist immediately. you may just have a sore muscle, but it could be something more serious.

let him take look at you and ask some questions. then get an mri or whatever image of your back to check for ruptured discs. also get multiple opinions. i had three or four doctors give me the, "well, your flexibility seems fine and you don’t seem to have any loss in strength so take a couple of Advil twice a day for two weeks and come back if the pain persists." i lost years of racing/riding/sports because of those douche bag muther fockers. finally, i found a doctor who recognized what the problem was, but it was already too late. he prescribed an intense exercise regiment and physical therapy. now i ride again -hard too- but the damage to my back was permanent. :mad:

go to an orthopedist ASAP and if he gives you the 'take some Advil....' routine, go to another doctor. repeat as necessary.

a bad back will make you miserable. trust me. it can be fixed and it is damned well worth it!!

scratch that, do NOt see an orthopedist, they will just prescribe you a bunch of pills which couyld lead to "needing" surgery

go see a CHRIPRACTOR !!!

i had a condition that i was told needed drastic surgery.. needless to say a year later my chiropractor has worked her magic and my back is in perfect shape., even the sports doctor was amazed. he wouldnt praise the chiorpractic, but he kept saying whatever i am doing keep doing it haha
work up a healthy addiction to Rx painkillers- you won't hurt no more... until you try to quit

but to be serious, dont go from doctor to doctor looking for someone to "fix" you with surgery or hardcore meds- try 2, maybe 3 doctors tops if thats what you want to do. Overdiagnosing and overprescribing isn't fun or healthy, and its way too common. A chiropractor would be a better idea (IMO).


oh, and if you ride a hardtail, try fs instead- I had a lot of lower back pain from riding urban on an aluminum ht, but fs made that go away
what kind of treatment did you guys end up getting?
I'm reading up on it and it looks like a lot of physical therapy is getting perscribed.
Sounds like some stretches and exercises might help.
Maybe someone can suggest some, i've been trying to mix in some stomach crunches lately to take some of the load off.

Read the book "Treat your own back" by Robin (sp?) Mckenzie and purchase a Mckenzie roll for your car and office chair. Learn to maintain the arch in your back..stoop to pick up instead of bending over. I could go on and on about what this book has taught me..but it really will not mean anything to you until you understand what is happening to your back. What I did (After repeated visits to the Dr. for the usual pills and shots because I was in an episode) was get referred to a therapists trained in the Mckenzie technique and learned the exercises and causes of my pain. It really has been worth it's weight in gold to me. Of course..you must rule out anything more serious. Chiropractic did not help my particular problem.

well, not to start a flame war with the other two guys, -in fact i think we all agree- but what you are experiencing sounds a lot like what my problems started out as.

to me the most important thing -the break through- was being diagnosed properly. the only way to actually detect if you have herniated discs or not is to do an MRI scan. the orthopedist i finally wound up with is also a licensed chiropractor as well as a licensed accupuncturist (is there such a word?). both my doctor and a specialist/surgeon said and MRI was necessary. the MRI helped identify three ruptured discs. after discussion and further analysis the doctors unequivocally ruled out any operation. i ruled out pain killers (except alcohol ;) ).

as i said earlier, we decided on a rigorous treatment & prevention regiment. this regiment was a combination of stretching, specific muscle group strength building, chiropractic adjustments and accupuncture. (yes, accupuncture. my insurance even paid for it!)

be careful with what exercises you choose. in fact, it is definitely better to let the doctor or experienced physical therapist reccomend some exercises. don't over do it -less can be more.

so, i repeat myself: go find a doctor (be it and orthopedist or a chiro, whatever) that doesn't just charge you a hundred bucks and tell you to take some pain killers/advil/tylenol for a couple of days. keep looking until you find a guy who is willing to prescribe corrective and preventative PT...it is your right to ask for a second opinion!

edit: i tried the mckenzie program too. people at work though i was nutty. you are supposed to those exercises like ten times a day or something.... me with my exercise matt in the office doing those exercises on the floor got me a couple of weird looks.

Bingo!

Unless you get a MRI, your doctor is just taking educated guesses. Insist that they give you an MRI. And an x-ray is not an MRI.

When I went to a (well respected) chiropractor and he tired to treat me for a curved spine. This wasn't my problem. My problem was a ruptured L5 (IIRC).

A ruptured disc takes 1 - 1.5 years to heal. And for most of that time you have to stay off your bike.

My PT also had me doing some movements that were making things worse. It took me forever before I found a doctor who seem to know what he was talking about.

Oh and if you have a HT, get a FS.

killed sitting in the car or at class, i always have to sit with my knees above my pelvis.
sounds like you could have a herniated L4-L5, usually this would cause pain radiating down the leg but with a herniatition directily out the posterior of the disk you get severe pain when sitting with your knees lower then your waist.

i live in canada so i got an MRI and CT scan for free, found out i had a herniated L4/L5 with a buldging disc at the L3 Level. you must get one of thesse to determine the exact cause of your pain.

what helped me the most and i swear by it, is sleeping postition, i havent slept in a bed for 3 years now and i always sleep in the fetal postion with a PILLOW between my knees. i found that when i slept on a matrress my pelvis would sink into the mattress causing my back and ankles to come out of alignment, i know it sounds stupid but on the floor with a pillow between my legs both my legs are perpendiclular to tthe ground limiting the amount of stress on the lower back region.

ab excercises especially with a stablity ball and lower back extensions and some massive hamsting stretching should help you out alot.

Pretty agree much of what Chuffer said.

For me, it started out slow, but when my lower back finally went....walking, sitting, sleeping was pretty much hell....until they removed half of my disk below L5.

Ride quite a bit now, and Vioxx is like a wonder drug on the days when my back does not want to co-operate.
