On the spot in my experience, if the rebound is all of the way open or even a couple clicks damped it kicks up too much for my liking. I ran it over damped (4 clicks) for quite sometime because I didn't like that skippy feeling in the rough - it did feel a bit dead at times which I didn't like but the wheel stuck to it's line pretty good. I finally settled on a little more sag and 3 clicks and that seems like a good combo descending/climbing, ground hugging/lively. I imagine you should be able to get a rebound setting that works out of the stock shock. It'll take some tinkering tho.
