Hey all, I lost my Magellan Explorist tonight. The unit is white with a black and white display, it is an older one....maybe from 2002? I bought it used for $40 so it is not a huge deal, but would like it back if possible. I was all over the place and have no idea at all where I could have lost it since I never looked at it. It is powered by a Magellan specific battery pack, so it probably wouldnt even be worth buying the data/power cable so I am not too worried about someone keeping it for themselves.

Thanks guys!

"The GPS calculates location for you. Communicating that location to a tracking center requires a separate service," says Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of SiRF Technology, the largest supplier of GPS chips to navigation device makers.

It looks like there may be a service to help locate, but like I said...it was a used $40 unit and the service is about $20 a year from what I have read.

Good idea tho, I never thought of trying to tack it that way.

Shouldn't one be able to log onto a website and locate your lost GPS?! I mean, isn't that what they do?

They should be impossible to lose. Same thing with phones...
actually, not true.

most consumer GPS are actually only GPSr - Global Positioning System Receivers - with no transmission capability to report their location.

maybe you're thinking of SPOT?
