Los Burros OK to solo?

671 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bobo_krkk_NIN
Greetings,

I am going to be up in Pinetop the first week in August and have decided to do some riding while the kids are napping.
Is Los Burros a trail that I could ride safely alone? Is there much other trail traffic on weekdays?
How is the cell coverage on Los Burros? The wife will know where are I am so I have some
emergency coverage.

Any advice would be appreciated...

I wouldn't count on cell coverage. the normal caveats about riding alone aside, its not a real tough trail if you are an experienced AZ rider. About 14 miles\2 hrs, some decent climbs at elevation , but nothing gnarly and nothing real long or painful. If you ride any of the rugged trails around here alone, you should be ok. No services, so have enough water.

You might see some folks, but dont count on it. Its not remote, but remote enough if you get into trouble 20 min off the road.

Biggest risk might be getting lost, as there are options and it can be easy to lose direction in the trees. Bring a gps etc to be safe and a map hardcopy, esp. if alone on a new trail.
just look for the blue diamonds on the trees. They mark the whole trail system. I would say the only real way to get lost is to venture off onto the fire roads. Its a great ride and I would ride up that way more often it was a little closer for me.
I've done it 3 times solo and never had an issue. As mentioned, just follow the diamonds, the trail is very well marked...
Sounds like I should be OK

Thanks for the comments. Looks like I should be OK, but don't plan on cell phone coverage.
I have been riding with a gps for about a month now so I should be able to find my way.
Load up the M.U.L.E with water and be careful. Sounds like good advice.

thanks,
