did a search on this and didn't come up with much. i'm looking for a top notch lbs for my cousin in metro la area. a shop with qualified people who can help them buy bikes that will fit their needs. some kind of mountain bike by the way. they aren't even sure what will suit them best between f.s. hard tail etc. also can be counted on to take care of them after the sale. thanks.

The Path.... never been there but heard great things about it.
Supergo, Santa Monica: I love it, but some people find the customer service "arrogant" and unhelpful

I just (literally, 2 hours ago, and it's dark now, bugger) bought a dualie at Bike Attack on Main in Santa Monica (just south of Pico, opposite Urth Cafe), their bike selection isn't the greatest (they carry KHS, Foes and Mountain Cycle mainly, they specialise in downhill gear, as well as beach cruisers if you're into that kind of thing
), but they're a great bunch of guys and they'll definitely look after you whether you bought your bike there or not.Bikecology at Washington and Lincoln in Marina Del Rey has a large selection of bikes and the staff there are pretty friendly and helpful too.

EDIT: Dude, I think I've seen you at Supergo, Endo Verendo. At least I saw a guy with a Turner Flux who said he had a pug. Don't know if you have a pug though

Ask for George (sales guy) at Helen's Santa Monica on Broadway. If you build a bike there ask Wilbur to build it. He is the best.dirtdonk said:

I've shopped in Supergo for years and I sure know what you mean about their amazing customer service Their customer service actually has improved quite a bit but still not to standards. There are a couple of guys in the Santa Monica shop that are pretty helpful. I highly recommend "Big Brad" when you are in the Santa Monica store. He is very helpful and a nice guy to deal with. Other than that I would just go in there and buy what I need and leave.

Helen's in Westwood Village.
the difference in customer service between that shop and the Santa Monica shop couldn't be more extreme.
A friend was charged for replacing all brake & shifter cables, and sold a new drivetrain to remedy a shifting prob.(Westwood)
SM store said cables were never replaced(!) and the problem was the rear der. hanger.

Like the other poster said - ask for George but alot of their sales guys are local riders...they are a little more expensive - but they can wiggle on their prices if you mention a better deal somewhere else. Definitely more for high end bikes. Supergo is a toss up depending on who helps you...

Bike shops vary a lot...
Many times it depends on what the neighborhood is like. If it is in an area that is not heavily inhabitated by mountain bikers and high end roadies, you may not find many bikes over $300 or $400 even though they may be common brands. Don't even bother asking for XT or XTR. You may even see some brand new thumb shifters in the display case (not that that is necessarily a bad thing).
That being said, if you make your way over towards Santa Monica, try both Supergo and Helen's. I like them both. I don't know of any shops near downtown that I could recommend. But if you go out 15 to 40 miles in just about any direction, there are lots of excellent choices.

They're super helpful and can usually have the bike done in less than an hour.
