Getting back into mountain biking after a 20 absence. Looking at bikes and saw the 2020 Rockhopper Comp 1X at about $700. Took one for a ride and the large seemed a tad big. Im 5’10” and the specialized sizing put me on the border of medium and large. Didn’t have a medium at the shop I went to but I did ride a Giant medium Talon 29” that felt better than the Rockhopper large. The Rockhopper seems like a great price for a 1x9 bike. Any thoughts on it? I did like the feel of the drivetrain on the Rockhopper more than the Talon. I want the most bike I can get for $600-700. This looks like it right now.

Most people don't like the Rockhopper 1x Expert/Comp models. They end up going on heavy clearance because no one wants them. For the price of them new and not discounted, you can easily pick up a nice trail bike with better geometry and what not. If you are digging those bikes, I would consider the Diamondback Sync'r or maybe the Salsa Timberjack. The Sync'r has 27.5" wheels but the TJ uses both types of wheels.

I picked up a 2020 Rockhopper Comp 1X 29er. Its got Microshift Advent 1x9 drivetrain, hydro brakes, and a basic shock. Should allow me to really get back into the swing of things before I get into upgrades.

Go with the Expert for $970.00 you get an Suntour airfork considerably better than the spring fork on the comp, also Deore 1x10 .

Only drawback in it is still a quick release fork and frame, move up to the chisel ~ $1325 to get through axles and lighter DSW welded Aluminum Frame and Sram SX 12 Speed

I have owned a 2018 Rockhopper Comp, currently have a 2019 Rockhopper Pro 1x11 and have just bought a Chisel Expert 2018 as well.

I like matt black Specialised bikes!!

Anyway heads up on a couple of things with 2018+ Rockhoppers.

The Head tube is not tapered on comp models and below so you are limited if you want to upgrade the fork. It is on the Pro and Expert.

The comp and below are also not boost QR rear on the 2019 frame whereas the expert and the Pro are. I’d check this on the 2020

The fork on the 2019 Pro is non boost QR.....So on my Pro the back is boost but the front isn't

I assume this is the same on the 2020 expert but I would check.

Don't you just love Specialised?

Anyway I love my 1x Pro. I'm sure you will love your Rochopper as well.

Oh also if you get a Rockhopper with a boost QR rear you can upgrade to a DT Swiss tandem RWS and a front 100mm QR RWS.

I run this setup on the Rockhopper now.

FYI the chisel is a level above the Rockhopper in frame finish and is of course thru axle but I prefer the look of the tubes on the Rockhopper. It reminds me of the last alloy epic.

The Chisel is well more chiseled
