Long leg/short torso modern trail bike fit

Hiya

I’m looking to buy a 2021 Giant trance x 29er. On Giants I’ve always struggled to find a good fit. I’m just shy of 6 foot with long legs short torso and longish arms. So on the Giant sizing i sit on the medium and large cusp.

When i tried both the medium I had to put the seat all the way back on the seat post head and I stilll felt like I was sitting off tthe back of of seat by about an inch. I also had my knees hitting the bars occasions. But the shop guy said when I tried the large he felt i was over reaching and looked like I was pulling my shoulder forward when turning. …but otherwise I felt comfortable on large and loved that I felt naturally over the centre of the bike when climbing. While on the medium I had to pull myself forward on the steepish climb.

Shop guy says he could but a 10mm longer stem on the medium but will that fix sitting my tendency to sit on the an inch off the back of saddle wth it jammed all th way back on the rails ??? I gather I’m not alone in my long leg/short torso dilemma
Shop guy has no bias to sell either bike out of self interest so i think he is really trying to do the right thing.

HELP !!!

Swapping a stem for a test ride takes just a couple minutes and no cables are involved.
Go back in and swap the stem. They'll have a box of old stems in the service area.
He can do it. Or bring your multi-tool and do it yourself if they're busy.
Then ride in into ditches and on the grass or whatever you can as a test.
It sounds to me you're close enough to a large. You can tune the fit with bars with more rise, more sweep and or wider bars.
OP, like you, I have long limbs and shorter torso (I'm 6'1" w/36" inseam.)
I ride an XL (in Kona, Canfield, Trek, Guerrilla Gravity anyway.)
I prefer steep STAs so I slide my seat all the way forward on the rails.
I run a short stem (32-40mm reach). I prefer the way a bike handles with a shorter stem.
I like a long wheelbase -- makes me feel more secure whenever coming in for a wonky landing.
I can't imagine anything smaller than a large would be right for you.

By your description, I'd say L all the way. Easier to make the cockpit shorter (to a point, at least) without messing up the dynamics than to make it longer.
6'1" with 34.5" inseam and Large all the way. Pushing your seat forward may be all you need to keep some weight on the front. I prefer a roomy cockpit and knees hitting the forks is my indicator of a "too small" frame sizing. Sitting off the back of the seat will not work for me.

I got them to put a 40mm stem (stock 50mm) on the large which made all the difference. Payed my money and was a very happy camper on my first ride.
