Hey guys, so I have been playing around with the idea of making a photo calendar of a bunch of the Arizona locals that help play a big role in making the mountain bike scene what it is today. No pros, no superstars, just the average guys and girls who have made themselves into local legends through their contributions to the sport. I want to make it a 14 month calendar January through following February so I will need 14 people. On it I will put all the big dates for races, events and rides as well as anything else important that people should have on their calendars. In the back I would love to have an up and comer section with some of the badass little kids that are out their tearing it up, many of whom attend pump track at Fishes. So anyway, I need your guy's help getting some people in for this. I know of many people that I would like to have in here, but I know there are also many more that I am not familiar with. Here are some of the people I have in mind so far...

Shortbus James
Dirt Girl
Andy and Bob
Steve-O
AZ epic rider
Ryan from Kore
Fish
Stan Klanowski
Brent 666
.....so I need some more people so please throw out your suggestions.

As for these people I listed, I will try and get in contact with them and get some times together to meet up and take some pictures (if they are interested in participating of course). I think this would be a good way to shed some good light on the general mountain bike scene here. Thank you for your help guys!

Hey Joe,

The only name I can think of (in addition to what you have) is a guy that does not hang out on these boards. His name is Gabe and he is always riding UP the waterfall like it is nothing. He rides around with a horn on his helmet and is always singing at the top of his lungs whatever death metal is on his IPOD. Not only does every serious mountain biker know of Gabe's ability to torque up any climb on SOMO, but I would bet any regular hiker or visitor to SOMO has seen and wondered about that guy.

I'll locate some pics for you or we might make some more today:) I like the idea... We can fill in every wed. for mornin' shuttles w/ start times, thursdays for pump track, sundays for short bus/silent sunday...this will keep everyone on schedule and stoked:thumbsup:

Thanks Joey! I'm not sure what I've done to warrant being a local hero except post endlessly about riding and my love of riding. I might be able to supply some decent pics if we can all go out riding together. You know how I love taking pictures! I've already got a few good ones of Shortbus James. 666 will be difficult - he's rather camera shy.

Phx local PaulB and Tuscon's Todd Sadow could be added to the list. Jim Wilcox for his Squealer and FOTP underground events. Monkeybutt Jeff and SuLing pretty much single-handedly got MTBers out for all BCT trailbuilding, making a huge difference in development of that trail. Epicrider Dale for his incredible maps. The list goes on and on... so many cool people around these parts!

WOW! Bob and I made the list together, how STOKED we are. Joey you are definitely a "local hero" in the scene. Front page material is my vote! I'm sure many others will agree.

Durt Gurl do not be so humble, you have celebrity status in these here hills

Don't forget Dan Bazinski, creator of the cactus cup, designer of the tracks at mcdowell and estrella and in my mind the best race promoter the state has ever seen and he's been mountain biking longer than any of us.

Haha thank you for the props guys but I cant put myself in my own calendar. You guys are spitting out some great requests though, I totally agree on Clockwork he is a must and the rest of the guys I will need to find out some more information. When you guys post some names if you have their contact info can you PM that to me as well so I can follow up on it? I know these are many various riders with very different backgrounds so it is hard to trace them through the chain. Emails, phone numbers, MTBR user names, anything that can help me contact them to see if they are interested. Thanks again guys for all your help.

I would definitely put CW in wayyyy before me. Man, I can think of lots of people who've done more than me. I basically just show up :)
My nominees;
1) Chris Cocalis; Titus and now Pivot, keeping AZ cool.
2) Clockwork and Daniel
3) Michael Cornelius (if you don't know him, google JFA. Original badass, and he bikes!)
4) Michael Yares. Although no longer living in AZ he really pushed for access and trails and continues to do so.

Plus he does all that on a road bike equivalent with semi-slicks!!!

I say:
DirtGirl for being a tour guide for anyone who needs one for the PHX stuff.
EpicRider for his awesome maps.
Monkeybutt and Su for the BCT trail work.
Eabos for his steward work on SOMO.
Shortbusjames for the UUUMMM shortbus that everyone knows.
Clockwork for NRA.
Ya I know, these have been mentioned already. Just putting in another nod for them.

Dirgurl (shes just so popular and helpful she is an icon of Arizona MTB)
Shortbus James (the shuttle godfather, Sundays rule because of him)
Clockwork and Daniel (They built NRA, and they contribute hundreds of hours of trailwork in other areas)
Steve-O (one of the top riders in the state, and everything we did as Smoken Spokes)
Michael Yares (one of the top activists in the state before he left AZ cause he got too old)
Epic Rider (riding and mapping the state)
Fish ( a legend of the scene, pumptrack thursdays have changed lives)
Su Ling and Monkey Butt (big time activists in the MTB community and BCT trailwork)
Dan Basinski (Cactus cup, enough said)
Todd Sadow (puts on some of the greatest endurance races around)
Bob and Andy (Started the Wednesday morning shuttle saga that is so popular now)
Brent 666 (has played a big role in promoting the sport and running AZfreeride.com)
Ken Bennet (is one of the most respected riders around in all genres)
Jim Wilcox (The squeeler and FOTP are the ****)

I think this will be the lineup for the calendar, if these people could contact me via email at [email protected] that would be awesome or I can hunt them down. If someone knows one of these cats and they dont use the board can you tell them whats up? I realize that there are probably 1000 other people that also deserve to be on board but there are only so many spots, maybe next year...

I will need to either get pictures, or take pictures of everyone and I will give them a little interview to fill out and it will all go into the calendar. If there is anything else that you think I should add please let me know!

Yes! try to catch Gabe, you'll probably have to club him off his bike, I've never seen that dude stop!! He go's right up the waterfall like its not even there!!, that dude needs to be in the calender!!!!!

haha yea I know you will have all the good stuff in your writeup, i was just wondering if there is anything else I should add into the calendar that might be cool? So far this is what I am thinking
14 month calendar, 14 people
a short writeup on each person with pictures
dates of races, shuttles, events, silent sundays, trail work days, full moons for night rides, festivals and so on will be integrated into the calendar
in the back I will have an up and comer section for the little guys...
maybe a trail porn section at the end too.
Any other ideas would be appreciated if there is something else you guys would like to see on here!

AZepicriderandrunner

I'd throw azepicriderandrunner, Chad, into the mix. Helped organize springfling this past year, almost singlehandedly keeps the Arizona Endurance Series rolling, gowing and improving. Now he's doing fundraisers for the AZTrail. His posts truly inspire the masses about what is possible if you just get out and ride...for a very long time.
Cheers,
M

I am confused as to who is AZepicrider? There are a few people who post under similar names on here, I thought Chad was the same guy who puts out all the awesome maps as well? Is this not the same person? I see his posts all the time with some amazing endurance rides with some superb pictures, and I thought it was the same person. If it is not it would be awesome to include them both.

I believe that Dale is the one who does the maps.
He was on the Mt Graham shuttle with me a few years back.
Are you planning on doing this calender for 2010? I don't know how long it takes to get together and printed etc. Kind of seems like short notice. Also it seems that many of the smaller races and events get announced shortly before the event that might make inclusion in a calender difficult.
Not trying to be a wet blanket, just my $0.02.
