I haven't had much time to work on it, but my tandem is getting closer to completion. I did a preliminary assembly to confirm stoker stem length (still need to order) and braze-on location. I'm glad I did, since I found that a water bottle mount would have been in the way of the front derailleur! Realistically, it'll probably be another two months before it's off to paint (lots of work travel).

Guys, that is some nice work there.

My contribution to the week. Got the snowbike built up. The conditions were just about perfect in the mornings this past weekend: I could ride across the top of the snow (which had plenty of traction). Breakthrough was not too bad at all. I could ride my backyard loops...though they sure look different under a solid 18"of snow. First time out on wheels since the day after xmas around here.

Blaster, what cranks did you use for that? I'm guessing the stoker set doesn't have an external BB,.

I'm using Middleburn cranks. You can order Middleburn cranks for a tandem configuration, but over the last couple years, I've collected three sets of these cranksets for next to nothing. For the front, I simply swapped sides, and for the rear I used two rights.

For the pedals, I will swap spindles in the front, and for the rear I ordered another right spindle to install into the pedal on the left. While that sounds like a lot of effort, the cost made it worthwhile.

And no, they're not the new external type Middleburns. I'm using square taper BBs. For this build, I used some White Industries 121 mm BBs, but I'm going to go with 116 mm Phil BBs. I'd like to go with 113 mm BBs, but I got a little carried away with my tire clearance and lost too much chainring clearance (although I could easily fit a 2.5" tire in there with plenty of mud clearance...although neither of that will be necessary).

More Kid's Stuff

Great stuff, you guys!

I spent a few hours on Sunday making a mount for kid cranks for my road tandem. I felt like a longer mount would be better to avoid damaging the seat tube. Still needs to be cut apart and painted, but I don't think I'll do much finish work on this one. I don't have a media blaster, and the brazing isn't all that bad. Then I'm either going to steal some kid cranks from my Giant parts bike, or shorten another pair of cheapie adult cranks depending on whether the Giant stuff works. My daughters are going to be two wheeled terrors when they are teens.

Hey Blaster, I'm anxious to try my hand at a tandem mtb. I'm planning to pm you some questions unless you want to start a tandem thread. Yours looks very much like what I'm thinking of.
