I've got a project lite wheel i'm building on a 28 h mavic 3.1, not the lightest rim but plenty strong. I've got the hub and spokes spec'd but am wondering if theres a good lite UST tire out there. I'm on Big jim 2.25 now and love them but the UST version is 200 grams more. I guess what i'm wondering is if I should try the tubed tire on the UST rim with stans or just live with the extra 200 grams from a UST tire. Whats the drawbacks from using a tubed tire on a UST rim? Sidewall leaks? Blowouts?

If weight's your concern...

go with a regular tire with Stan's. I'm running Nevegals on [email protected]!c 819s and having zero problems. The only downside I've heard is that the sidewalls get "tired" more quickly, because they're not design to be used without tubes, and the extra stresses from acceleration and braking break them down sooner. I'm gonna wear out the tread way before the sidewalls break down, so I'm not worried about it.

There are some UST tires out there that are under 700gr, but they're all 2.0-2.1 XC tires. (Hutch!nson, IRC & Maxx!$ have some fairly light UST tires) I get the feeling you're looking for beefier treads.

Nice project BTW. I was thinking about getting some 28h ISO shells for my K!ng Racelite hubs and getting some Xmax rims. Should be a great all around enduro-type wheel.

Hope that helps.

You might have all the issues you describe...

But many riders including myself have had none.
the lighest UST tires are going to be smaller in size except for the Scorpion 2.0 UST Light, which is around the same weight and size.
Other wise the Python Light UST 2.0 or Scwalbe Jimmy 2.1 UST around 648g

If you do want a Big Jim Light, I have a NEW one in the MTBR clasifieds for $30

Well if we're talking tubes, you can run a lighter Lunarlight tube at 90-100 gms, so theres 100gms saved, or do what I do and lots of others, like run std tires on 24 hole 3.1 rims(Schwable Jimmy Lights 495gms, or RRalphs 450-470gms, or Conti Twister SS 347gms, or...etc...etc...) with one scoop of Stans which adds only 60gms. Thats the lightest way to go by far. The lightest UST tires I've seen worth a damn are 640-660gms. Anything less usually gives up way too much volumn.
Have 6 races(1 60 mile adventure race in pisgah)and not one problem, flat, burp, blowup, or anything else to date this season. I'm sold. Have had countless tube flats in comparison over the same time frame.

I will probably end up buying a UST Big Jim 2.25 since its right around 780g's.
In the meantime I think I will try using the tube version with some home made stans.

Duckman, didnt you have trouble sealing those at first?
I've been using them with tubes for about 4 months so they should be nice and stretched out by now. I'm actually surprised they have lasted this long. Should I use a gas station air compressor or will a pump w soap and water do ?

Dirt Boy, thanks but i've got an acct with Celeste over at Schwalbe and will probably pick up a pair, you could still hook me up with some 819 discs though, I refuse to work with mavics customer service, its an absolute joke, last time I called them I was ready to strangle myself with the phone cord. Send me an email or pm-

I had a terrible time with the 2.25 RRs. Interestingly enough, those were the only ones. And one had been used with a tube before. Never ever any probs with others, but I've always used my bigass 20gal 1.5hp mega compressor, sooo....

The way to beat the non sealing deal, is to use a tube first...seat the beads...then deflate and undo one bead/side only to remove the tube, the reinstall the static ust valve, and then its usually not a prob to get the one side of the bead to then seat with a compressor. Never tried with a pump. Yes I'm spoiled.
