Today I had planned to give my frame's bearings some new grease and adjusting preload. Wasn't as easy as I had thought though.

I started disassembling the rocker, and this is what I found, note that I haven't even washed my bike, this is from driving with the bike on the car in rain.



Upper rocker looks like this:



About here I got stuck, what do I do now? Nicolai only has guides in german and I can't understand that, Google translate doesn't help very much either.

Dipper or Nicolai UK, you guys gotta know how to service a frame? Can you please help me?

If its the same as the fr you should be able to pull the rocker levers off,The upper only runs on nylon bushes.Give them a pull and gently work them off.

Yeah that's what the exploded view on Nic's site shows too, I'll give it a try, althogh I've already tried bringing some force on them. Thanks

You were right Norco, thanks. A little tap was all it needed.



I noticed that the washer isn't identical on both sides, and ofcourse, I don't know which size is supposed to sit where.





So, there are 4 washers who look the same but in which direction am I supposed to mount them? :S

I moved on the the Horst link, but how do I service these needle bearings? Can't remove seatstay from chainstay without pressing the axle out, am I supposed to do that?

Push the tube out that's in the center.The shiny part in the lower picture,should just push out/Tap out with rubber mallet and a socket

Looking at the wear/polishing in the middle picture i would say the one shown there is the wrong way around.

This is a guess

Nicolai do a tool kit with drifts etc that help but as said above you can improvise with sockets etc. Not sure about the odd size washer. where did that come from? I've only stripped one AM but can't remember there being different size washers.

Spoke to Nic yesterday, the washers are supposed to look the same on both sides but can get worn and look like this, they told me it was fine to put them any way:)

dipper: I was in the lathe and made som press tools yesterday, gonna continue later on today.

Aaah it's disassembled. One thing that got me confused was that the horst pivot is not a needle bearing as Nic's manual says, it was also a nylon bushing. As a matter of fact all of the bearings were nylon bushings.



What kind of grease am I supposed to use for the reassembly? How tight should one adjust the preload?

I use Motorex Prepm i had it for doing the pivots on my Turner.
My Fr had needle bearings in it except the upper swing link pivot.

What kind of grease is that? Is it like bearing grease or fork grease? Would be interesting to know why they've switched to bushings instead of needle bearings.

How hard do you preload bearings?

Its a fork grease,Used to be used on Manitou forks.Turner bikes use it on there bushings.I think that the Igus bushes are self lubricating.Think they are designed to run dry.Just looked on Igus's website and it said maintenamce free,run dry

okay but there were some grease in there when the frame was new, gonna check with Nic on monday.

Think mine had blue grease in it when i first had it.Unless the previous owner used it.This could be for the Needle bearings though.

I just pinch them up very lightly.It only takes out the sideways slackness/wear

Yupp mine had blue grease coming out of all pivots if I'm not wrong.

Okay yeah that's how I thought it was done, neat with preloadable pivots :)

There`s blue grease in all pivots from N-factory. Don`t know what brand they (Nicolai) use, but I´ve found that all marine greases (sea vaselines) works well, and at least Yamaha`s water resistant sea vaseline is blue too. Have used that and it lasts well, does not wash out and does not mess a frame.

Strange to read that there are different types of washers in pivots, in my AC-frame there are two similar pairs of washers in lower rocker pivot... and there`re needle bearings in Horst linkages :confused:

The washers aren't supposed to be different, that's just how they've worn.

I was quite shocked when I couldn't find any needle bearings in the Horst link :s
