I was Stranded at Chicago O’Hara this weekend so I rented a car and scouted the route from Racine Wisconsin via rail to trail to Kenosha to Russell Road to the Des Plaines River Trail to the North Shore Trail to the Robert McClory Bike path to the Green Bay Bike Trail.

I will be out in Racine for a week this summer with my hard tail SS MTB and would like to ride to Chicago, spend the night downtown close to the Art Institute, visit the museums the next day, and then ride back to Racine.

From the southern end of the Green Bay Trail, what is the best way to link up with the Lakefront Trail?

Also if you know of any bike friendly hotels in downtown Chicago close to the Art Institue, please advise!

Thanks

Ride west along Lake Cook Road to just west of the Chicago Botanic Garden to pick up the North Branch Trail headed south. Ride a bit further west to pick up the new Skokie Valley Trail also headed south. (If you are riding east off the Des Plaines Trail along Rt 176, you'll pass the north end of the Skokie Valley Trail before you get to the McClory/Green Bay Trail.) I have ridden neither of these choices and don't know the best way to reach the Lakefront Trail at the south end. As I recall the North Branch dumps out in Caldwell Woods on the Northwest Side of Chicago.

Check out trailville.com for northern trails.
