Hello all,
I'll be returning home to Hawaii for a few weeks in Dec-Jan and was wondering what the story is with Tantalus? I used to ride there all the time in the early 90's, roots and rocks and the top trail that takes you down to Nuuanu Valley. I heard that the Sierra Club stepped in and closed the place down to bikes. Did they ever reopen the trails? Any info would be appreciated!

Yeah and those hiking boot clad no stay at home when it's muddy granola crunchers have royally screwed up the trails in Tantalus. I did a early morning...ummmmm let's call it a recon misson...up there last srping...footprint shaped craters everywhere. I guess the "leave no trace" message is lost on those guys.

And it's Na Ala Hele who put in the bike ban...the "temporary" bike ban that was supposed to be lifted after an unusually wet year. Well, it's been almost 10 years (I may be off on that) and the "temporary" ban is still in effect. I've written off Tantalus and that's a shame seeing as that's where I first rode off-road. I cut my teeth riding those narrow off camber trails. Met lots of good folks at "4 corners" those two years...not anymore.

Aiea Loop Trail

I remember a trail with a concrete bench on it overlooking a valley. Does anyone know the name of that trail?
You're probably thinking of Aiea Loop Trail. It has 2 benches, made out of recycled materials, over looking valleys. I believe the benches were provided courtesy of IMBA and a lot of hard work by mtbrs.

Nope, it was on a Tantalus trail. The bench was a concrete one like a bus stop but it was off the trail, on a straight and if you are moving fast looking into the valley it would be easy to miss.

The last time I rode Tantalus was in the mid 90's so the bench might be gone or overgrown by now.

...everyone knows those guys. I mostly rode with another group of more...ummmm...veteran riders. But if it's an overstuffed haole you remember...that could well have been me.

If I can recall the last time I saw you was the time that the pros did a race at Ala Moana park. You had a brand new S-works bike. I cannot remember if it was a Full Suspension setup. My name is Eric and I rode a Merlin Hardtail which I still own.

I think I remember the one you are talking about. It was on the top trail looking over the back of manoa valley. I dont remember any of the names unfortunately. Roots and rocks is the only one that stuck in my mind... Too many years.
