I am thinking of heading up to Lake Tahoe this weekend. Probably leave (from north bay) Friday early in the morning and return Sunday afternoon. Stay in South Lake Tahoe or somewhere else convenient for riding, and ride at least Mr Toad and the Flume Trail.

I don't mind driving there on my own (but if anyone wants to come let me know) but I am not too keen on riding alone, so is there anyone planning to ride there this Fri/Sat/Sun that I can hook up with?

Also is there a budget kind of place to stay there like a hostel or something? Normally I'd camp but all my camping gear is still in Holland....

Thanks

Niels

I can borrow camping equipment from a colleague. Looks like there are plenty of campgrounds on the south-east side of the lake. Was thinking of Nevada Beach as it is close to the trails I want to ride. Any other suggestions? Do I need to reserve?

I understand Rim Trail is only allowed on even days (?), so I plan to ride Rim and Flume on Saturday.

The 9 mile section from Tahoe Meadows to Tunnel Creek is only portion of the TRT that is even days only.

You can do the 5 mile section of the TRT north of Marlete Lake and Flume any day of the week.

I see a lot of people car camping at Big Meadow as I'm riding to Mr Toads. I don't know if you need reservations or anything but there always seems to be plenty of room. The beauty of camping there is the TRT is right there and you're only 4 miles to Mr. Toads or you can ride the Christmas Valley loop.

You won't be getting out of the smoke if you come here. Haven't rid'n since Sunday. Morning is better but its all bad. Lake level is better then the upper elevations. Pray for wind.

Nielsvk,

I just arrived in Tahoe today and hate to tell you but the smoke is here as well. Cannot even see across the lake. Forecast is for it to get better this weekend...question is how much.

Nielsvk..PM me about riding TRT and Flume Saturday if you still looking to ride as I am looking to go also.

How about Lake Tahoe on 7/18-20?

Oh well you can't have everything... I'll bring my gas mask...
If you decide to reschedule your trip to Tahoe this week. I'm available to carpool on the week of July 18/19/20. I can chip in for gas money and camping gears. Let me know.

Cheers

So I went anyway, and had a great time.

Passing through Sacramento on Friday morning the smoke there was really bad. Climbing up to Lake Tahoe on the 50 the sky cleared quite a bit though, the sun came through and for the first time in a week I saw blue in the sky again :)

I drove up and down South Lake Tahoe a bit, pretty ugly town with all those run down motels and casinos. I ended up pitching my tent at Big Meadow as Guesswho117 suggested.

In the afternoon I rode up Tahoe Rim Trail to Mr Toads. The altitude hit me hard on that climb. After a break and a chat with a nice lady on a SC Superlight (the only person I met on the trail) I felt better, and not much later I found the turn off to Mt Toads. I was a bit intimidated by the section through the big boulders at the beginning, and as I was alone and still a bit shaky from the altitude I walked most of it. After that it was all doable, I gained some confidence and I rode pretty much everything. Great trail!!! The climb back up South Truckee Rd was not all that interesting and in retrospect I should have added Christmas Valley but at that point I didn't know it was there  Anyway it was a nice ride and the ice cold bath in the stream at Big Meadow was at least as good.

Saturday morning I met Oki Doki at Spooner, we shuttled ourselves to Tahoe Meadows and rode TRT, Flume and back to Spooner. That section of the TRT is awesome, technical but never too technical, and I finally rode down the famous steps I have seen in pictures so many times. It was also relatively quiet on the TRT except for the occasional trail runner. It was everything but quiet on Flume, I have never seen so many mountain bikers on a trail! It also surprised me how non technical Flume is, given its fame... however the views more than make up for it. The fire road back to Spooner was... well it was a fire road, what more can I say... After driving back to Tahoe Meadows to pick up Oki Doki's car we finished with a great burrito for lunch. Great day, great ride, great company! It was great to finally ride these trails after having seen so many pictures and wanting to ride here for years. It certainly lived up to my (high) expectations!

After chilling out and another nice cool night at Big Meadow I left Sunday morning. I will definitely be back here.
