Depends..

Steve,

Depends on which shore you are talking about. The North shore has some sweet, tight narrow trails that require poaching.

The South shore has a legal multi-use trail that is fast, and better than being on the road if you need a dirt fix but not technical and not narrow. It does hold up in the wet as it is nearly 100% decomposed granite, except for the last 500yds under the Folsom Auburn bridge, which can get very snotty. It's also short ~5 miles. I can zip it out on my SS in under 50 minutes. (in and out). Like I said, rain day, nothing better to do, yeah worth it.
But then again Granite Bay is similarly constructed, has much more mileage and is more twisty. If you just want to ride something different go for it. For me, it's 4 miles away from me/3 Light rails stops so I ride it when I'm crunched for time and need a dirt fix.

Steve,

check out the Folsom Breakouts night ride schedule. I think they do a bit of night riding on those trails (the north side), you'd be able to get a fun loop in with them. I'll say this it's tame by Auburn comparisons, but fun. I sometimes hit some of the trails on my cx bike when commuting back home.

Rainy Day?

Maybe if I was in Rancho and needed a dirt fix it might be worth it. Coming down from Auburn... I don't know. As someone said, the better trails are on the North Shore and I work under the assumption that they are legal but I'm not 100% sure (Some folks have told me they are poach). All the riding is fairly flat. You can go almost the whole way from the fish hatchery to Folsom Dam on Dirt. I ride this trail with my bro when we don't have time to get up to Auburn. I've also ridden the south shore with Char. Flat but I suppose it's dirt. There is some interesting stuff on the south side after rainbow bridge. Not technical at all but kindof interesting.

I rode it the other day

I live in folsom and from my house around the lake and home is 20ish miles. Zon and i ride it a lot in the winter as it is not too muddy and it is also a great night ride in the summer. It is flat and a little boring if ridden too much, but for out of your door get a work out in, it is fun.

It's a great ride especially after work or whenever you dont have time to drive far to a trail head. You can make a nice loop out of it by starting in old town Folsom and picking up the single track just below Bicycles +. I prefer clockwise from there following the buff single track down to Hazel and cross the bridge over to the north side. Ride east a couple hundred yards on the bike tral and you will pick up the single track that takes you to the Shady Trail, nice rolley single track though the oak trees. From there you will bust out at Main Ave and then head towards the horse stables for more very fun single track that will take you to the base of the bluffs. Climb the bluffs (the only major climb) and head east along the top of the bluffs to ***** Bar. Pick up the single track again and follow it to the Cliff House and then cross the river to old town. Total length is ~ 13 miles , 95% single track. If ya want to add a few more miles start at Sunrise following the single track along the south side of the river. Makes it ~ 19 mile ride. This time a year I ride it a lot during the week so if you want to join in the fun drop me a note.
