I posted the question inquiring if anyone applied the tactics of a motorcycle enduro to a mountain bike race, and received a lot of positive feedback. Made the leap, and that experiment is scheduled to take place October 30, at Lake Hope State Park, near McArthur, Ohio. See below, all are welcome to participate, throttle twisters, and MTBers.

2011 Lake Hope MTB "Enduro"

No entry fee!!! Consider this a social ride, no points at stake, no championships, just an off-road experiment, you against the clock.

Required equipment: helmet, digital watch, mountain bike, enough snacks, water, energy drinks for 17 miles on the trail.

Route sheet will be supplied.

Start is 11:00 AM at the Lake Hope picnic area, just past the beach parking lot. Arrive at least ½ hour early, so you can get your minute, ask questions, etc.

Route: Two thirds rolling single-track, with four road sections, to give everyone a break.

If you want to try riding, but not sure about your physical ability, there are plenty of bail-outs along the forest service road.

Wonder what Enduro is all about? Here are a few pointers for those new, it's easy.

Sign in to get your number, or "minute". Riders leave in rows of three or four, in one minute intervals.
Locate the Official Key Time Clock, somewhere near sign in. Whatever Key Time currently is on the Key Time watch, subtract the "minute" you were just given, and set you race watch. Example: If Key Time is showing 10:57 am, and you are "minute" 3A, set your race watch to 10:54 am. Now, your race watch will correspond to the route sheet times. Do your best to arrive at every turn at the time shown on the route sheet. (The speed average is 10 MPH, but ride at whatever speed you feel comfortable. Remember, keep it fun, safe, and enjoy yourself, don't blow up.)

Make sense? Do this for all turns on the route sheet, and use your instincts to try and maintain 10 MPH between turns.

RESETS can be considered rest breaks. If turn #6 is a Reset, check your race watch, and don't leave until it's time. If you arrive at the Reset late, you may not have much time to rest?

Think you can stay on time? There will be secret checkpoints scattered throughout, to see how good you are at staying on time.
For every minute late you arrive at a check, you lose one point. If you arrive early, you lose two points for the first minute and then five points for any additional minute early. This is called "burning" a check. (Ex. Arrive three minutes early and you lose twelve points!)

That's all there is to it. Got questions? Send me a message.

Stats:
-Key Time 11:00 AM (start first row)
-10 MPH average
-17.12 ground miles
-21.68 route sheet miles
-23 marked turns
-3 resets
-checks.....at least 5
-Completion time 1:00 PM +/-

This is awesome! I would make the drive from Cincy, but I have to work. :madman: I love the Lake Hope trail, that and Great Seal is where I learned to MTB. Have fun!

Reminder: This is not what you would call an event, not sanctioned, no entry fees, and not supported.

It is a public riding area, and you might pass other riders on the trail.

Prepare like you would, to ride 15 to 20 miles (2 hours plus), and bring a digital watch.

You will select a ride time when you arrive, rows of one to four riders leave together, one minute intervals, you might make some new friends?

If you have questions about how to proceed, arrive early, and we'll answer them. We are basically playing connect the dots, from intersection to intersection, using some trail, and some forest service road. The rider tries to judge his speed, so he arrives at those intersections at a pre-determined time.

Not just riding, but using your brain a little for this one.

Not a cross country race.

A lot going on around Athens this weekend. It will be a little cool, but cabins are available, not sure, but maybe campsites too at Lake Hope?

The Bobcat Bloodbath ride is Saturday evening (see the Athens Bike Shop's Facebook page), our little enduro Sunday, and the Athens Halloween party Sat night.
