knee pain/ fit question

546 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Chain Brain
When fitting a bike and checking to see if the pedal spindle is under the knee, are you measuring from the center of the knee or the kneecap?
How far do you want the spindle from directly under the knee?
What position should the pedals be in when you measure?
Thanks,
Joe

if you measure from the indent just under the kneecap the line should be to the spindle for the pedal, if you measure from the outside of the knee it should be at the end of the crankarm

I've found that seat height also will affect knee pain
do you have any pics? Thanks!

no, but its pretty easy
first set the height
then, get a plumb bob or a string with a weight tied on one end
lean against a wall while clipped in
right foot @ 3 oclock hang string from knee, see where the string crosses the pedal /crankarm
you dont need to do both sides
And for seat height, method I use is unclip and rest my heel on the pedal.
If my leg is straight without reaching, it's just right for me.
Another note on seat height, if you have pain in the front of your knee you should try raising your seat and vise versa.
