I know the size for a 2005 King Kikapu is 31.8 but what is the recommended type? Top pull or bottom pull and what swing? The kona web site shows pictures of the bike with 2 different types of derailleurs. Thanks.

Traditional swing top pull. IIRC I tried a bottom pull and could not get it low enough before it hit a weld at the BB area.
