Killington Vermont for DH??

912 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  philshep
Does anyone ride DH at Killington Vermont? We’re from Toronto, planning a summer road trip and possibly including it as a stop. I haven’t been able to find anything about DH there… any input would be appreciated! :D

Also on our trip, we plan to stop at:

Plattekill NY
Diablo in NJ
Attitash NH
Highland Mountain NH (if open)

Any thoughts on the above places would be cool too.

Thanks,

Killington is my favorite spot for DH in the North East but I ride "soft" DH... Mt.Snow is also a lot of fun and in the same area. SundayRiver used to be great but it's closed. Whiteface/Lake Placid is not bad but I prefer Killington/Mt.Snow. Never been to the other ones you listed. Have a fun trip.
Thanks Banzai!

How much vertical are we talking about at Killington? is it the 'K1' gondola that takes you up? I don't think we will mind some 'soft' downhill after hitting those other places...

Can you give me any idea of how long one run lasts?

Thanks!

Killington has a lot of fast, open access roads that link thier trials together. I like it for DH. There has been some new trail construction over the past few years that are a little more technical and "woodsy." The gondola that runs is the one that is adjacent to the base lodge.

Whiteface is definitely worth the trip. A lot of vertical and LOOOONG Dh runs. Open ski trails runs with tight DH singletrack and woods. Real fun stuff. Runs can easily take 20-30 minutes to complete. And then a quick gondola ride back to the top. Usually not too crowded. Check it out, too.

thanks Toby!

We hit whiteface last year, and it was pretty good! Not too many options on trails but i'm sure it will get better!

How much vertical does killington have in comparison to Whiteface; in other words, how long does it take to do a run down the mountain?

Yes it's the gondola but I have no idea how much vertical, maybe check the mountain stats. When I say I do "soft" downhill, it doesn't mean there is no hardcore at Killington, I think there is plenty, its just that I take the easy going trails. I goes down for a pretty long time by the way. There's a few trails where you basically go across the whole ski area, feels like it takes forever to get down. Mt.Snow also has some pretty long runs but if I remember well, I think you have to pedal a bit more at Mt.Snow, at least in the easy trails.
Attitash is STEEP!

Super steep and technical, in my opinion. Actually too steep for my taste. Half the time you're all over the brakes and just trying not to go over the bars on the technical wood sections. 2 years ago I crashed so hard there I destoyed one whole side of my Monster T. Ripped right through the lower and destoyed the stanchion as well on the rocks. I'm man enough to admit it's beyond my capabilities.

But if you like steep stuff it's right up your alley.

I prefer Mt Snow. I could ride that place all day long. It's a little faster and not crazy steep. I think it has the perfect blend of open and wooded sections. Just a fun place to ride.

My 2 cents.;)
Thanks for the input Fishleg, actually, I LOVE steep :D so Attitash should be terrific!

Would anyone recommend Mt. Snow over Killington? We can only do one or the other with our schedule....

thanks,
phil
