I saw a Kestrel Nitro show model at Interbike Anaheim in late 1987.

From May to November 2012, the San Francisco Airport will feature a mountain bike exhibit including key bikes in the evolution. SFO's curators are hoping to find a Kestrel Nitro for the show. They need confirmation ASAP.

Anyone know where to find a KESTREL NITRO?

Bevel Hogg where are you?

Wasn't it a one-off? Bondo covered aluminum put together by Paul Turner and Keith Bontrager IIRC.

I would check with those two to see if they have any leads on where it went. I for some reason think it may have ended up at the old Santa Cruz facility of Rock Shox. Also try the Spokesman in SC, for some reason I think they had it for some time too.
That is an amazingly contemporary bike... V brakes, suspension, lockouts, carbon... amazing foresight into what mountain biking would eventually become.

Thanks for posting those scans!
One off and unridable from what I remember. Note the lack of brake arch on the fork.

I think the brakes serve as a structural component in this case ;)
Kestrel had this at their booth at Interbike in 2006, along with a flex frame and a double-clamp rigid fork.

Looking at the pictures briefly, it looks like a fair amount of changes had been made by 2006.
-green decals to black decals (could just be the photos)
-pat pending decal missing on the rear triangle
-original fork replaced by a Rock Shox
-6 speed to 7 speed
-XT rear derailleur to Deore
-white housing to black
-anodized to silver rims
-original cable to rear shock (lock out?) is gone
-front brake changed to canti
-silver chain rings to black
-smooth Turbo to suede
-Nitro decal disappears

Probably others as well.

Different stem and headset too.
