KE #038 Got Dirty Today

1839 Views 20 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Debaser
Yesterday was a very long day! I was in Salida. After staying up late Sunday helping TomP post his GDR updates (moral support only) we got up somewhere between 4:30 and 5am yesterday to head up into the mountains for a ride before the monsoons hit. We got our ride in, got mixed up in a scuffle with the monsoons and then I headed home, late. On the way home I stopped by my friends house to put together KE #038. I had the parts, he had the mechanical skills and we both had fun. I left his house around 1am this morning with the job complete and the bike ready to ride.

I woke up this morning excited. I went back to my friend's house, picked up the bike and gave the bike it's maiden voyage on singletrack. Oh my, what a ride!

The monsoons hit today so KE #038 has already tasted mud, seen lightning and heard thunder.

So I've included only one picture. She is not quite ready to be viewed full-on in this persnickety forum; the steerer tube is not cut, who knows if the saddle is in exactly the right position and there are bits and pieces I feel need more work. So to assuage those of you who feel cheated by yet another 'teaser' post by yours truly, here is a link to some pics from Salida yesterday. There were three 29'ers on the ride yesterday; my lovely Walt, a Curtlo and a Titus.

Thanks for the update EdE. Take your time on the pics. Even though I thought I would see a full shot of your steed in this post, it's nice to have to wait. That said, I look forward to the full shot and a ride review, etc... Congrats on the inaugural ride. It sounds like it had the full on rockies-style "baptism"!!! ;)
And watch out if there is too much slack in your chain.

Thanks - I gave you a mini-mini review on your Ogre posting.

Heh-heh - and I'll make sure I preface the review and pics with "No deal on this bike!" for the donut eating promotion police.

Those bottle mounts look dodgy.
Damn! I knew someone would notice that I had not tightened the bottle cage mount bolts to exactly 5N-m.

How was that big ride yesterday Loud? Did the monsoons hit?

I'm not entirely qualified to comment because I didn't do Methodist and cut out at 285. I'll have to go back later this summer and try doing the whole thing again. What I did do was a kick, and not so much suffering that it wasn't fun. The storms did kick up after I finished and were intense in spots.
in real life

I happened upon this bike in flesh yesterday and will attest to its quest for perfection.
Everything looked spot on to me, but I had just began the descent after my 2k climb, so maybe my vision was slightly blurred and shaky. I am not sure what's holding him up. ;)

Ed- I thought I might find a picture of the bike here, but was dissapointed. I should have looked closer in real life, but I didn't want to be rude by staring at your Ti & A.

SPIES, Spies everywhere!! :p

Goldenboy, obviously you aren't up to speed with how even the most picayune oversight on my part will hound me if I post pics without making sure all is just right; cables just the right length and crossed just so (mine are too long but I don't care), chain should not dangle, every bolt the right tension, do the parts match, is there some color POP somewhere to distinguish the bike from the unwashed masses (showing that deep thought and meditation went into how it was put together), etc. etc.

Kidding of course. I did get this snap at the bike shop on my home though :D

Can I call that 21 lbs. even? If I took off the bottle cage it would have been. I'm not a weight-weenie otherwise it'd be lower, but damn that's light!

So the Mary bar you saw yesterday has been removed. I tried it on two rides and really wanted to like it but it wasn't working for me. My massive low-rise bar w/ Cane bar ends (28" wide in total!) is now gracing the bike and it feels so much nicer. The steerer tube still has not been cut although that is on the agenda for tonight (posting pics with an uncut steerer tube is a MAJOR faux pas). I have new bottle cages.

So close. Ok I'll post a couple of half shots....I am a d!ck. Remember the Mary bar is gone, the orange cage is gone....

You found me out, I have been hired to follow you and the progress of the top secret build

If I had known you'd be so sensitive about someone commenting on the slack job you've done I wouldn't have posted on a public forum. We can all wait to flame your hard work until you call it done;)
Whoa Ed E! We're getting there. I guess it has yet to be ready for the full shot. Looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing! :)
Tirez?

Hey Ed- no judgemwnt going on here... tell me about the tire choice of an Exi in the back and an Ignitor in the front. Are you going to stay with that? I would have guessed the bigger Exi would be on the front. Just curious. I'm doing Ignitors on either end these days.

I am only doing road rides here lately because of mud. I put on fenders and it's a nice way to taper before CB. We finally have some big time rain. Close to 2" in less than a week.

Dude, you get up way too early in the morning ;)

Actually, I'd rather be running Exi's front and rear like I usually do but I had the Ignitor laying around for the new front wheel. The rear wheel was already set up and I didn't feel like changing tires. The Exi is Kevlar, better than the steel beads I ran last year

The rain has been unrelenting here for a day and a half. Looks like a brief break right now so I'm heading out. I can't wait for CB.

Me too, but I sure hope things get a little more normal weather-wise.

Yesterday I got myself AND Andrew M. rollin' before 6 AM. We got to Sargents at around 6:35 and embarked for the climb up Old Monarch so we could meet some folks at Monarch Pass to do Agate. Early enough, this weekend; or so we thought!

It was just sprinkling when we started from Sargents, still sprinkling for the first few miles up Old Monarch road. Then about half way up the sky opened up and it friggin' POURED all the rest of the way. We were soaked to the bone.

Regretfully, the rest of the ride had to be scrubbed. I got a ride back down to Sargents to retrieve my truck. Ran the heater full bore all the way back to Salida. I was blue and my fingers were numb when I finally got home. Took a hot shower, got under a blanket on the couch, and watched it rain cats and dogs all damned day.

Man, I'm looking on the internet for plans for an Ark this morning...

We're having a break from the rain too, so I'm going to ride. But not planning to be out there much past noon. There's plenty o' cloud cover out there this morning. Sure to rain again.

Does Kent have a web sight yet?
I think the site is still under construction. I think Kent likes to talk about and build bikes not web sites ;)

Yahoo! I got a nice 6 hr. ride in today with a couple of friends and it didn't rain too much. The trails were stellar (Buff Creek baby!) That's it for me until CB on Friday. And yeah, I sure hope it doesn't deluge at CB on Saturday like it has been recently - that could be tough.

Ha-ha, so you thought you could fool mother nature and get up early. Sounds like last weekend all over again. Hope you got the ride in today. I'm off to kick my feet up with a glass of wine and watch Mystery Science Theater 3000 - "Manos".

The KE, on it's third outing finally felt really dialed in! Poor thing in three rides has been ridden in three rainstorms. Kent nailed the geometry and size. I just had to make some handlebar ansd seat adjustments. It railed the trails today.

See you Friday Tom!!
