My wife and I will be in Kauai from 7/25 to 8/3 and hope to spend at least 2 days riding. I've read through all the "where to ride" threads, but my question is what trails are in good condition and fun this week? It seems that Powerline is a good one, how is it currently? Does anyone do it as an out and back or is it shuttle only? I don't mind a little hike-a-bike.

Also, I decided against shipping our bikes over, so I'm wondering which shop (Outfitters Kauai or Kuaui Cycle & Tour) has the newest and/or best bikes right now. We ride fullys here in WNC but would not object to HTs if they're pretty nice ones.

Any insight would be appreciated.

see you soon,

Go to Kauai Cycle. They'll give you good trail info too.

If Powerline is wet. Which is "should" be. Don't do it. It's not that fun. You can ride it both ways for a 26 miler... takes about 4 hours dry, 6 wet. Pretty much no locals would do this. It takes about a week to dry out so ask at the bike shop or start checking the Honolulu NOAA hydrology report, it's the rain gauge in the middle of the island.

Here's a link to the Powerline forecast:

I'd skip it though. Jump in the rental and ride the Contour road plus a ridge road or two up in Kokee. Just as climby, but dry and shady. Good for a rental bike. A tiny bit of dirt-road traffic, usually only on weekends when hunters are out. Polihale ridge or Milolii ridge would be the ticket. Go to the lodge for Portuguese Bean Soup, Cornbread and a Beer to finish it off right.

Here's the Contour forecast:

Also, get John Alford's book. It's pretty good. Ridge roads are on http://maps.google.com/ but the Contour road (oddly) is not.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the tips

Is there any singletrack on Polihale ridge or Milolii ridge? Just wonder cause I'd love to ride some Hawaiian tech stuff. Rental bike just means go a little slower.
I'll check with Kauai Cycle like you suggest.

Someone told me today that it isn't as humid in Hawaii as it is NC. I didn't think this was possible. Your current temps aren't that much different than ours. So what should I expect?

Countdown has begun, 3 days left...

No. Those are forestry roads. Single track, hiking trails are off limits in the state park ;) .

Tech XC trails are Powerline, Kalepa and Anahola. All on the east side. Ask Kauai Cycle.

Right on. Bring your own pedals and shoes if you're clippers. Check your PMs for dark aloha.
