... and I'm feeling unreasonably smug about it.

However, it's a little daunting how many ways there are to go wrong, just to buy the damned chain. It has to be for the right manufacturer (SRAM or Shimano), number of gears (10,11,12, whatever), length, and possibly model of derailleur. I'm not sure about this last one, because one person I talked to didn't indicate it was an issue, but the salesperson at Kinetic specifically asked.

Anyway, if anyone's contemplating doing this, I watched this Park Tool video first: How to Replace a Chain on a Bike - Sizing & Installation . The only tools I actually needed were the Park Tools chain pliers and a Crankbrothers M19 multi tool.

There are a couple of gotchas that I'd never have thought of--like making sure the embossed writing is on the outside.
