I've seen videos of dudes bunny hopping while only on their back tire. How do you do that?

do you need like hydro brakes or will mechanical disc work?

K, I guess it's hard to explain. Ryan Leech does it a lot, maybe it's just a trials rider thing. He'll jump around on just his back tire. It's probably not a common skill.

The "bunny hopping" part is easy. The balancing on the rear tire is the hard part. If you want to do it you should work on the back tire thing first.
You might try learning how to do a manual first. It's basically the same thing. Just you are rolling before the hop.
And yes any brake will work. Even a coaster brake if you get good enought.

This trick is also somewhat dependent on your frame geometry. A long chainstay can make this a very hard trick... where as most DJ or FR bike's short chainstays make manuals and backhops much easier. Not saying it's not possible on an average XC bike, I can certainly pull little manuals on mine.... but it's far easier when you get on a machine made for that.
