picked up this beat up '01/88 off craigslist for about 200$ +gas( i should have drove away but oh'well, to late now)... lots rock chips, chain scuffed chain stay and a small dent on the top tube. not knowing the integrity of of the top tube i'm not going to put to much $$ into it. new tires, brakes and mid-grade drive train and pedals. maybe i'll use it as the loaner

Can you post a picture of the dent? If it's small and in the middle section of the tube, I wouldn't worry about it all.

What size frame is that?

and the front tire is an urban tread. a co-worker is giving me an Xc tioga tire. i want to upgrade to mechanical disks, a tighter cassette and XT components. i'm afraid if i take any type of drop that the frame will bend in 1/2. not that i'm going to take it down any dh trails though. might upgrade the rear shock too

Here is my recently upgraded 2001 88/3 with Avid BB7s and Mavic CrossRide wheels. I didn't see an increase in weight between that setup and the stock Avid rim brakes and Tioga Wheels. You can find great deals on BB7s and CrossRides.

I've owned the bike since new.

put some new tires on, tuned it up, new pedals and took her for a spin around the block. so much nicer of a ride then the homegrown! and i;m pretty sure it's a 17in, not a 15 but will have to dig out the tape measure to find out for sure

Well!! About a year and a half ago I inivertanly ran over the Stage4.. With some patients I finally found a suitable replacement! Snagged a barely used Stage3 for a descent price on eBay! I still have to swap some parts over from the Homegrown so soon enough she'll be on the Dirt!

How well do these climb? I helped my bro-in-law buy a Rocket 88 Stage II, in '01. I was on a hardtail at the time and he was new to mountain biking. I later upgraded to a Santa Cruz Superlight in '04 and never rode the 88 myself. I let the bro-in-law ride the SL one time and he said it climbed like a mountain goat compared to the 88, but I never got to compare.

I ask, because I may get to pick it up and complement the rest of my Schwinns ('01 HG and '00 Sweetspot).
