Hello,

Looking for a recommendation for budget bar and helmet lights for mountain biking. I would like to spend less than 150. Very open to amazon or ali express type options. I live on vancouver island and mostly ride technical trails. Please let me know what my best option is!

At the moment I think the best thing for you would be to wait and see what shows up on the "Black Friday Sales" the end of next month.

Off topic and not trying to pick a fight, but I would not be holding out for any sale on anything. We haven’t seen sales over any of the last few major holidays in past months. The supply chain is getting worse every day right now. I would be shocked if there were any major sales on Black Friday.

OP, I wish I could help but I’ll be watching this thread as I could use a decent light myself.

I am using 2 of these on my mountain bike. (I own 4 of them) $31 CAD each from amazon.ca. If they don't work for you, you can always use the free returns on Amazon.

May not be the best option, but it's an option. They may not stay level on your bars super well with technical riding.

I have them positioned above the brake lever reservoirs, so when they inevitably droop with a hard hit, the brake lever holds them up. I also cut off some of the excess plastic from the mounting thing because it's ridiculously long.

I find they're plenty bright even with just one running, but I can run 2 at low brightness and get by for a quite a few hours.

I also sometimes use a regular headlamp, meant for construction contractors on my helmet. This headlamp is my absolute favourite for anything and everything. Working on the car, working on the house, biking, camping.

It uses AA batteries instead of AAA like every other headlamp. The battery pack is on the back of your head, not the front, and it's is water resistant and shockproof. 3 straps instead of 2 for improved security.

$61 for 2 lights and $41 for a headlamp, $102 + tax from Amazon.ca.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, and think supply chain could actually get a touch worse, but happened to see an exception.

Did want to say that I saw Outbound Lighting post on here somewhere that they were still planning on having a black Friday sale.

It's dramatically far from the only problem, but hopeful the increased operating hours in the LA port give some kind of minimal improvement.

Thanks for all the info everyone, can anyone give me any info on mounting a light like a cygolite on a helmet?
You'll get better helmet oriented performance using the Amazon Cygolite clone Ceco 1000 or 1200 (pretty sure Cygolite makes the lights for Ceco). Cygolite Metro's have a broader beam (great for the bars) but less intensity so the throw is not as good as Ceco's. Other than that the lights are almost identical and they will all work with the Cygolite helmet mount also available on Amazon. Your not going to get much more than 90min. of high mode runtime with these style of lights if that's an issue for you. If your just looking for small self-contained lights for the bars I've gotten better performance from Ravemen lights (also on Amazon). LR800, PR800/900/1200 are all good performing bar lights (nice wide beams) that would pair well with the Ceco lights. Runtimes vary from 1.2 - 2.5 hrs. but the two 800's that have the shorter runtimes can be run using a powerbank as a remote battery to extend their range. If you need longer runtimes or more power let me know. You might have to stretch your budget a little bit.

I'm a little more optimistic about the sales than you but also wouldn't surprise me to see supply problems (we'll see). What are you looking for in a light?

Something that I don’t outride the beam of going 7mph. I really don’t plan on doing full on night rides, but being able to get out at dusk and be able to extend my time in the trail would be nice.

The plan is still that we'll do it. Only caveat is that it may take several weeks just to get the parts. We are feeling the supply chain squeeze as well, but it's more for our PCBA's that are built in Phoenix and lack of avaliablity of both some components (that we've been able to find alternatives for) and labor for the actual assembly process for the boards. We ordered thousands of parts months ago but the plastics and die castings are actually pretty easy to get. We are lucky that we can afford the air shipment costs and avoid the port hassles, which are entirely real.

We have a giant order of our customized USB-C cables that are on a boat that spent 6 weeks on the water outside of the port after a several week journey. We were supposed to get them a month and a half ago but still waiting on them. Thankfully that was pretty much the only component we ocean shipped, but air shipping pricing is also WAY up. What used to cost $3k to airship now costs $8-9k. It's insane.

Thanks that's awesome (the sale not the silly chain part). Was gong crazy trying to find the other post. Fortunately not in a rush... planning on a 100 mile ride and if you pass a certain point after a certain time you're required to have lights (and reasonably so). But....I think it could also be nice to start a ride a little earlier in the dark, especially this time of year.

But yeah that's awful on the logistics. I think I heard ocean shipping is also way up... which makes sense since there are 60+ ships just waiting off the coast of CA.
