Is it normal on cranks for some of the teeth to appear broken? My bike is pretty new and I noticed what appeared to be some broken teeth. I looked at some photos of the day I picked up my bike and it was the same. I then looked at some photos from the FSA site and those also have what appear to be broken teeth.

The FSA and XTR cranks have it, but the NOIR and Race Face dont.

What is the purpose of different size teeth?

More info on my build and lots of pics at:

Different manufacturers have different ideas on what yields the best shift, i.e., use different tooth profiles, ramp profiles, pins, etc. FSA and Shimano apparently believe that more radically different tooth heights improves shifting--Yes, the Race Face have a couple spots with different tooth heights too, but it is a much more subtle height difference--at least it in on the set of Next cranks I have waiting on my Sultan buildup.
