I was at REI for their anniversary sale today and bought a Bontrager Solstice MIPS - https://www.rei.com/product/153003/bontrager-solstice-mips-bike-helmet

It's what the salesman pointed me toward when I told him I was looking for a MTB helmet in the range of $50 - $75, and it fit well, with the adjuster knob on the back and MIPS technology.

But now that I'm home, and looking online, I see this helmet isn't included on their site when I filter for MTB helmets, and the back doesn't seem to go down as far as something like this Giro Chronicle: https://www.rei.com/product/109950/giro-chronicle-mips-bike-helmet

Did I buy the wrong helmet? I'm just beginning, so will be riding easy paved trails, forest roads, and mostly non-technical dirt trails. But I'd like to start with a good helmet and can easily return this one.

The link you included states this is a road bicycling helmet. That said, the helmet will not know whether it hits asphalt or dirt.

The Giro Chronicle does indeed provide greater protection. If the Giro fits you well I would exchange helmets.

trek says it is a mtb helmet .. however the Giro one looks way better I'd personally exchange it if it was me..

I've wear both mountain bike and road bike helmets and they are all the same. Some road bike helmets may have more ventilation than some mountain bike helmet designs.

For road cycling, I like ventilation > max protection
For mountain biking, I like max protection > ventilation
