Is the Reynolds BLACKLABEL 308/289 Industry Nine Hydra hubs CXray spokes superior to DT SWISS XMC 1501 in every way?

I have a bike on order and they are telling me they can give me the bike month and a half to two months sooner if I get a XT package with the DT Swiss Excellency 1501 wheel set versus the month and a half or longer wait for the Reynolds BLACKLABEL i9 Hydra hub set.

Thank you!

They are great wheels. I don't have dt swiss but those Reynolds are my wife's yeti and they are super light. I love my BL widetrail 349. I like them better than my weareone rims.
Personal preference. I feel carbon wheels are essential but others like alloy. If I remember correctly the DTs aren’t super light but are good wheels. I regret not keeping mine as a backup. Reynolds wheels have a good rep. Hydra’s are nice but the axles can snap with heavy powerful riders.

Both are really nice wheels, but be aware the DTs come with 240 EXP hubs which have been problematic. DT have a voluntary recall out on them due to disengagement / skipping issues.

DT also use aluminum nipples on their carbon rims which is just an idiotic idea if you ride in the wet at all.

Dt has a recall on the exp situation? I have seen a warranty situation but have not seen a full recall yet.

Bigger problem with aluminum nipples and carbon wheels is with the use of ammonia based tire sealant which assists galvanic corrosion potentially causing premature nipple failure (well publicised with enve a few years back). Wet conditions are not as big a problem though.

Which sealants have ammonia?

Not a full recall, but they are repairing affected hubs FOC as long as the customer sends in a request. Had mine done a few months ago.
Does the sealant ever touch the nipples on the DT 1501 wheel set?

If you have a proper tape job no. If a poor tape job then possibly yes.
I would choose the Reynolds over those dt wheels in a heartbeat. They have far better (imo) i9 hubs and a nicely tuned ride feel with different rim width and spoke count front and back.
Do I9’s come with some sort of hearing protection these days? 😁 I have the DT 1501 set on my Switchblade and love them. One of the guys in our group has the i9’s and I always stay out in front of him. Not sure if his hubs have more drag than my DT’s or if I just ride faster b/c I think a swarm of bee’s are chasing me.

Hydras have surprisingly low drag when properly maintained. They can be pretty noisy though!
OP you are going to get a ton of different perspectives on this, IMO I take a DT hub over an I9 anytime.

I had 2 sets of new I9 wheels that broke on the first ride. Will never buy them again. I have had a DT Swiss hubs last 10 years and longer.
I know others have had the exact opposite experience, I9 would not back their warranty, screw them.

I would not make my decision based on the hubs here. They are both companies that make solid hubs. I really like the Reynolds BL ride feel. I have the wide trail and these wheels. Reynolds has also taken care of me in the warranty department. The only issue with Reynolds is you cannot rebuild your wheel to a different hub as that will void warranty. In that case I think they will crash replace them like they did for me which is 50% discount on any wheels they sell. DT Swiss has primarily been in the aluminum rim game so I am not sure I would trust first gen carbon rims from them.

Wow that is really surprising - I have never had negative issues with I9 - they warrantied a set of bearings (way back on their original hubs before torch) and I recall something with a set of pawls on a torch hub they sorted real quick for me as well.

I happily run i9 or dt right now - although I am not currently investing in the dt exp style hubs yet.
