when i have the bike upside down and i crank up the wheel with the pedals, i can see the cassette wiggle as the wheel (but not the cassette) spins. Would this account for my shifting woes and how do i fix it?

Most of my hubs do that.

It might be an imperfect freehub body, but not likely a bent hub. Fairly common but unless it's severe doubt it would cause particular problems; how much does it wiggle? What exactly are your shifting woes?

i used to have a cheap shimano hub which had the same thing. It seemed to have very little if no effect for me and i forgot about it until now. it only seemed to wiggle when the cassette was still so not sure if that is the same for you. i dont think it would cause any shift probs if it is. have since replaced it with a hope bulb. sexy sexy hub
