:D A month ago a helped my girl get an entry level road bike since she's always wanted to get one and she's totally gotten the cycling bug:thumbsup: So last night, we were talking about bikes that I wanted to get because I'm selling/sold all of my mountain bikes and I'm in need for a new commuter and a new touring bike as well as a new mountian bike. I showed her the bikes that I planned on getting:
  • Specialized Roubaix SL2 Elite Compact (touring/long rides)
  • Specialized Secteur Comp Compact (Commuter)
As for the mountain bike, since I sold my XC bike, and I sold/selling all of my DH/Freeride/Urban assault bikes, I want an all around "All Mountain" type bike since my days of riding the Vancouver Northshore are behind me :winker:. And, If I get the urge to head up to Whistler, I'll just rent a bike up there rather than to have a another DH that hardly gets any use. So, I'm desiding between:
  • Specialized Stumpjumper Expert 29er
  • Specialized Stumpjumper Comp 29er

So she says: "well, what's the difference between the two Stumpjumpers?" So I go into The Brain suspension and the adjustable seat post, etc on the Stumpy expert and that the Comp is not a bad bike either; but there is a $1300 difference in price between the two. I then tell her that my friend, who owns an LBS, is giving me a killer deal on the price on the bikes, plus he'll let me make payments on them and even take them home now if I wanted too!! To that, my gf says: "aaaaaannnndd??? where are the bikes??!!" "Well," I said, " I was trying to be financially responsible so I was hesitating in getting any, some, or all of them". To that she said: "FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE?!!! *****! You need to go your a$$ down there an pick those bikes up!!! Hell, while you were telling me the story, I looked around wondering why the bikes weren't already here!!"
Then she adds: "Do I get a mountain bike too? I've always wanted to mountain bike ride! And now that I've got the hang of this road riding, can we go mountain bike riding together!!?" I was speachless!:D

So, I've been order to go pick up my touring bike ASAP since we're doing the Cascade Bicycle club Chilly Hilly ride. Then, as the weather gets better, get my new commuter and my mountain bike. I think I'll surprise her and get her mountain bike at the same time I get mine. This will be hers:

A girl that wants to ride; life is good. :) :D

I can't believe I'm the first one to say this......Great story and all, BUT, why are you letting your girl friend dictate what you are doing? Are you living on combined incomes? If not, who cares what your gf thinks you should do? If you are trying to be responsible then be responsible, regardless of what others are saying (including that gf!) If you want to go get some new bicycles and can afford it, then go get em.

I agree with ArmySlowRdr....if she wants a mountain bike then have her go get herself one!

BTW--she sounds like a keeper if she enjoys riding.....

I hadn't thought of that...

Nice... but why not get her an Era... so she'll get a Brain, too?
But she's a beginner and I honestly don't think that she would understand or fully appreciate the benefits of The Brain.

Thats awesome, but the real question is: Why are you planning on getting a 29er....
Being 6'4" and 250pnds; a Stumpy 29er in a size XXL fits me like a glove. It's makes my 26er feel like I was riding a kids bike.

Two things come to mind:

Buy parts on line. The LBS nearly always has rotten prices. ;):D

Why does she not get to pick out her mountain bike ? :nono:
  1. LOL @ rotten prices
  2. Because she doesn't know anything about these things so she trusts my judgement. :D

Let's have some kids, we need a bigger house for kids, we need to save for college, you want to do what? Buy three new bikes, I don't think that's in the plan or budget besides you don't have time to ride bikes that much anymore.
We've both had kids and most of them are out of the house. It's coming up on the "just us" time!
