Is it shameful to have a bike this ugly

3111 Views 39 Replies 36 Participants Last post by  Margaritaman
I was just looking through the rigid 29er thread and realized I think I may have the ugliest bike at least in the 29er forum. I may need some help. I have some questions

- Is it shameful to have a bike this ugly?

- Other than buying a new frame or fork what can I do to make it look better?

- If you have a bike that is at least this ugly that you actually ride all the time please post a picture of it so I can feel better. Thanks

I've seen much much much much much worse. It's still good enough to have character.
Your bike looks sweet. Seriously, I wouldn't change a thing.
I don't know about how good or bad it looks, but be aware that aluminum Mary bars & Origin8 spacebars are currently being talked about on the forums for breakages! Go over to the single speed forum & also the mtbr search at the top of the page & check it out! I think the thread is called "Mary/Spacebar brakers".

Thanks. That is the only thing I've changed since the picture. I now have a the 17deg Salsa Moto Ace flat bar on the front. Mary was too much angle for me going downhill although I loved her on the climbs.
Looks just fine to me! Esp sitting there at Lake Ilsanjo at Annadel, if that is where I think it is! My XXIX is looking a bit funky with the "J-bars" on it, but I am liking the way it rides - who CARES if it is ugly or not? Does it play well? All that matters!
Perfomance has priority over looks for me.
Your bike looks okay, with a few small adjustments it would look even better.

If you replace the grips with black ones (matches the handlebar).
If you paint the fork also black, so you have a green/black bike. You could do this easily yourself without spending too much money.

I really like that frame and the color of it. Is that a brooks saddle? You could replace that as well if you want to (selle smp? LOL).

As long as you can ride the bike it's okay. Looks are great, but i don't like seeing a showroombike without any dirt, cratches on it. What's the point of having a mountainbike without using it the way it's ment to be.:)
The red grips aren't really me ... ;) and the leather seat with all that material looks heavy, some have cut away their Brooks saddles for a slimmer look.

I find that my bikes look better after the application of soap and water. That has little effect on how they ride, though, as long as I keep the drivetrain and brakes somewhat clean.
I'm all for ugly bike that ride well.
In your case, it will be worth it to make the bike uglier, while making it better if even possible. It may need some stickers and mis-matching parts. Why not one yellow grip?
it's 'special'

no, no, no... keep the bike... it has character and do you really want a bike that looks like everyone else's? If anything else... make it a little more unique.
I think it looks fine. At one point, my Flight had a pewter headset, orange brake levers, green seat clamp, blue fork and green paint.

I've seen worse. I might have gone with a different color on the grips, maybe a blue to set off the fork or a neutral grey/black. On the other hand, if you want to go for extreme ugly, how about some garish Velocity hoops and contrasting pedals?
You should enter it in a BattleBots competition !
I say Cloxxki's got the right idea. Put some Wal-mart happy face stickers on the fork. Go anti-hip and embrace the ugly. This is the path to true happiness.

There is no such thing as an ugly bike......although those grips don't look right.
That is indeed an ugly ride, but I like it.
Looks fine. you can always rattle can the frame to match the grips if you get tired of your current paint scheme.
I Can not say until you post pics of the bike in question.
