Are you looking for mountain biking or road riding?

If you're looking at mountain biking, there's not much w/o a drive from Ione. Normally, the Foothill Trail Hounds make a weekend trip from the Jackson area, but I think the main fellas are racing at Boggs this weekend.

If you're looking at road riding, it is absolutely *phenomenal*!!!! Little traffic, lots of nice rolling hills, and some pretty good steep hills if you go upcountry.

Slightly OT, but I've always wondered how you pronounce Ione.

"Aye-own?"
"Aye-aw-nee?"
"Aye-on?"
"Eee-awn?"
"Eee-awn-eee?"

Total phonics nightmare. OK, maybe very off topic... but I'm actually serious. How do Ioneans say it?

Eye own

There are some nice intermediate trails at Hogan Res. probably over grown and hot right now.

Yes, pronunciation is "eye own" or "I own."

As I mentioned, not much right there for mountain biking, but figured I'd shoot you the link for the local MTB group. http://www.foothilltrailhounds.com/maps.html. New Hogan and New Melones are the closest actual trails, and they are still a bit of a drive from Ione.

You can also ride your MTB on some of the gravel roads for a nice, scenic ride. I ride from the corner of Paine (off Sutter Ione), up Paine, right onto Tonzi and then do a "Y" shaped ride going up Tonzi to the Hwy 49 bypass and back down, then up Vaira Ranch and back down, then back to the corner of Paine and Sutter Ione. Again, it's just gravel w/ some pavement country roads, but scenic and a decent workout.

sly park (jenkinson) is 57 minutes up the hill (e16) from Ione
Shaded single track. (search using sly park, jenkinson, fleming meadows) I would NOT recommend anything at melones
because of the heat.
perfect day to jump in the lake after the ride

Hah!

We used to ride at Ione all the time. There's a quarry there, and there were scads of trails around it. There was even a lake, made of some yellow/green watery substance. We called it Lake Prestone.

Man, those were the days. There was also this cliff that was probably 25 feet high. We'd inch our way over the lip and shoot down it, with a nice, smooth runout. Wheeeee!!

Wonder if the trails are still there...
