New Mexico - just outside of Albuquerque. They are hard to find, but this one was so obvious as he was on a fire road.

When I lived in Santa Barbara in the 1980's we saw them crossing the roads and trails frequently in the spring & summer on foggy mornings. At times on East Camino Cielo while connecting the Romero Canyon climb to another trail for the drop back to town, we would see 15 to 20 in a mile or two stretch.

Here in SLO town, I see them rarely in the hills, but have started seeing wild turkeys on my morning rides.
