Input on bike for DFW trails

Hello all. I'm a long time resident of the DFW area in Texas and grew up riding many of these trails. There were quite a few years I ended up not riding, but finally found my way back to it. I didn't realize how much I missed riding, until I started riding again. Of course, I'm having to play catch up with getting back in shape but taking it little by little. As I find myself being able to ride more and more, I also find myself dreaming of upgrading to something a little more up to date.

I've always ridden a hardtail, and currently still do, so it's what I know and am used to. As I daydream about new bikes, I was curious what others ride or recommend for the DFW area trails. Is a hardtail sufficient and up for the task, or is full suspension much more preferable and better suited for our trails? I know there are pros and cons to either and I'm sure there is an overlap in the middle where both would likely work, but I was curious if there was a general consensus that one was better than the other for these local trails.

Thank you.

You can ride any DFW region trail on a hardtail, but full suspension is nice. If tuned right, it works well for keeping your rear tire planted on the rocky/rooty little climbs we have scattered around. If you frequent loop 'D' at Isle du Bois, or the red loop at Johnson Unit (both on Ray Roberts), FS is nice to have for the rocks there. To be honest, the only place I feel I "need" a FS is going off a drop on the east side of FWMBA's Gateway trail. It's something like 6 foot I think. Personally, I prefer FS, but I spend time riding bike parks outside of the state, so I get good use out of it.

My opinion, if you do go FS and stay in DFW, definitely lean toward an XC or milder trail bike. No need for an enduro. My daily ride bike is a 140/140 mm and I usually lock down the rear shock riding in DFW (it's not a 100% lock, but close). It leans a little more toward enduro than XC, and I am a little slower than others on some of our more XC climbing kinda stuff... if that matters (doesn't to me :) )

I ride a hightower on DFW trails (140/150mm), it is definitely overkill but I really like the bike and I also ride a lot in Arkansas as well. I am thinking about getting a second bike that is more suited for DFW trails. If I do I am looking at a 120/120mm FS. it seems to be the best combo for being full suspension and being able to handle the rooty sections. I really like the new top fuel or the transition spur. I called up the only transition dealer and they have no idea when spur will be in stock. they said they sell quickly and they advertise them as the ultimate bike for DFW.

Hard tail will be fine for really any DFW trail, but there are areas that a squishy bike would be nice.

What DFW trails has the OP ridden and prefer?
There are enough rocky places that FS would be important unless racing IME. The one thing is that I don't feel one should get a long-travel bike just for Northshore West and 2 jumps at Sansom Park, but a 29er will roll overstuff great and ~120mm will provide a nice ride on most trails and down closer to Austin.
Any 120ish bike would be fantastic. Ranging from an epic evo to a Ripley. You can also ride ANYWHERE in Texas on these bikes. That’s the question you should really be asking because there are fantastic trail systems across Texas you should seek out. These bikes are perfect for Bentonville as well which you should also check out.

Bentonville... agree! Close enough to DFW for a weekend run. Something for everyone, and a LOT of it.
