I think R/C helicopters have been used to video Formula 1 car racing. Not sure if they still do: it has been a while since I last watched a race.

Hola guys,

The filming is done at Hafjell, Norway (http://hafjellbikepark.blogspot.com/ and http://hafjellbikepark.blogspot.com/). Flying is done through video feed and video goggles. The recording is done separately with a GoPro HD cam. Nice stuff, is'nt it?

That is really innovative, and I'd venture to guess it's the future of action sports coverage. It seems like the perfect platform to cover big, fast outdoor sports like dh mtb, snowboard/ski, big wave surfing etc...

It also could free up course designers to use more natural features that may be farther away from the easily accessible areas.

I'll be looking for more!

These things are so cool. They provide such a dynamic take on action sports. First heard of them a couple of months ago with this whitewater kayak video.

Gotta say I think it applies to whitewater even better than mtb.

Truls, that's great stuff. Thanks for posting that up and congrats on the new addition and good luck getting back into the work rhythm after so much time off.

Pretty awesome, but obviously limited to open terrain. Would've been good for 2009 World Championships for example.

So in that last example with the Commencal dudes, is one person flying it and the other controlling the camera?

Precisely.

Check out this link for incredible videos and a bit of an article on it; http://www.pinkbike.com/news/dedicam-first-look-champery-2010.html

They fly it though some crazy tight spaces

Looks like a pretty simple system, Nicely done. Seems like you have quite a bit of the experimentation figured out. So what are your plans for the system from here? Any plans of flying indoors?

I had a VTOL platform fly post Katrina working S&R. Found nearly a dozen or more people that would have otherwise been looked over so I'm fairly interested in the topic and is why I ask.

incredible.
The dedi-cam system looks pretty amazing and will most likely require a 2 man team due to it's use as a cinematic tool, but for true DH footage the chopper should be fully autonomous and just follow the 3 dimensional path created by the rider's head.

i've been playing around with thoughts of a "personal" version. A small enough copter and camera setup and a good controls system that will follow a "target". Not very easy to do on a small platform but the future will bring smaller/better cameras so payload will not be a huge problem. 3-d awareness would probably help avoiding trees but is probably out of reach for the current state of technology.

If anyone is interested, this is where it's all happening:
