indoor bike storage... PLEASE help

hey guys. i'm moving out of a house i'm renting and into an apartment. my lady doesn't want the bikes in sight and i refuse to keep them outside on the patio, so that's our compromise. i've considered one of those gravity stands but that still leaves the bikes in plain site.

so here's my idea... so i don't have to build it i'm hoping that something like this, or something i haven't thought of already exists.

i'd like to build a box about 2 or 2.5 feet wide, about 5 or 6 feet long, and about 4 feet high to slide behind the couch. i'd make the side and top hinged and then in order to slide in the bikes (one forward and one back) with the front wheels removed and the handlebars sideways.

please tell me i don't have to build this thing!

btw bikes are access 29er (21") and '11 rumblefish one (19"), so they're pretty big bikes.

:p Offer up one of these ugly things to hide it in and she will be happy to just look at the bike!

New lady friend?
funny stuff, although I do kinda agree.
No we've been together about a year. And she does everything for me :) so she she'd me very nicely to try and come up with a solution that involved the bikes being out of sight. The box was my idea. Ultimately shed be cool with the gravity wall hanger but I'd like to oblige her concerns as well
Put them in your neighbor's apartment. Problem solved! :D
LOL. I guess I'm gonna have to build this thing and see how it comes out.
Does she have any interest in biking at all? If so, get her a bike of her own and maybe she will come around. If she can't come to some compromise where you can keep your bikes safely inside without you resorting to building some contraption to hide them, then tell her that something of her's has to go too, surely she has a pile of shoes, or ten tons of makeup spread out all over the bathroom counter that gets on your nerves.
LOL. No we agreed the wall mount would be fine but we were gonna at least try to find another route. If there was something easy then that's what I'd jump on.
You must be single. It was my decision too.
We recently moved into a rental house without a garage from an apartment with a garage. Now the bikes goes inside behind the couch. When we moved in I said "wife, the bikes are going here!". She said ok. Then I said "wife, I'm hungry from moving all this stuff, make me a sandwich". She said ok. After the sandwich, I said "wife, I love you and all that stuff, but I think I need another wife. One for those cold nights, y'know." She said ok.
Then I woke up.
Moral of the story is, work something out about where to store said bike yet make it easy to retrieve and stow away.

yeah like i said. she's cool with the wall. i'm looking at one of these

but we want to try the behind the couch idea. i just want to have this box idea because it will be functional and easy on the eye.

Why not just rent an apartment with an extra bedroom? You could call it the "office". Put your computer and bikes in there. Plus you would have your own space to wrench on bikes.

A plywood box behind a couch sounds like more of an eye soar than two bikes expossed to me.
Sounds like you dont need the bikes, you should just send them my way where they will be properly cared for and stored however the bike best feels, also they would be ridden hard and put away wet.

But on a serious note, glad to hear you reached a compromise and that your current gf is going to get to stick around. Bikes > Girls.

I am asking what vendor did you see that bikerack, I am single but need something to store bikes and am thinking of something like that. It will be easier storage since I have one leaning against wall and one by my couch. Right now all alone if get tired of gf send my way LOL but the bikes are here first so she has no say. Y like.
The box sounds like it could be a good idea if it was done really well. I think it could easily end up being an eyesore to be sure though. Having a big, hinged, homemade , plywood style box sitting behind the couch sounds a lot worse than looking at two high performance bikes that could lean naturally against a wall in a low trafficked area of the house.

just search Google for bike gravity hanger or bike gravity rack. There are a couple different ones. I think even saris makes one.

you can paint a box and even drape some cloth over it. If in doubt, get the lady involved in that part
Just store it in your 4Runner.

Or if you're going to build a storage box, can't you just leave that outside on the patio?
