indoor bike, starting the road to recovery

I had a friend recently have a really bad accident on his bike, had to have steel rods in his upper right left it was that bad.

anyways is he (me also) to get an indoor bike, like at the gym, but more specifically for training. i remember a couple of years ago being in a trek shop and they had some nice bikes that i thought trek made to train on however for the love of me cannot find it on google.

also was wondering if there is a bike that you can put your own crank on?

looking for input from anyone who has been in this situation...
