In S Jersey and looking for someone to show me the ropes....

I guess Ill start with an intro, Im Derek - 29 and I am in S Jersey for some work (Williamstown/Crosskeys) for about 6 weeks (though I live in Fl). For all intensive purposes I am new to mountain biking (been since HS) so I am hoping to find some people willing to bring a beginner/out of towner along to show me some of the local trails and what not. I am willing to drive anywhere local +/- an hour or 2 for some action.

The bad news I don't even have a bike yet, but am hoping to seal the deal on a 08/09 Stumpy or Epic in the next couple days (have some leads on a couple).

The good news, first round is on me.

So whats the word guys?

my in laws live near where you are. i'd recommened camden county college, i been as well as ceres and gloucester county college. i think wharton has mtb too. if you can drive a bit in md is fair hill not too far 1 hr and white clay, de also about 1 hr. parvin another place, i have't been but not far from you. allaire is a bit north of you, but fun if you hook up w/a group:thumbsup:

Action Wheels is doing beginner rides at Camden County College Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights.

I went to Action Wheels to check out the Stumpies and they were very helpful. Told the kid helping me that I wasn't buying at the moment and he still followed me around and answered every single one of my questions and helped me for over an hour, offered to let me take a bike out for the weekend to demo, etc. Not too shabby, I think I will have to buy a used bike to stretch my dollar, but I will at least go back and buy gear from them to support them.

You should take Action Wheels up on their offer to demo a bike. Several of my friends have demo'd bikes there and it gives you a great chance to ride a pretty good bike even if you decide not to buy it. Gloucester County College and Ceres Park are both only about 15 minutes from Action Wheels. Although Ceres can be very confusing if your not with someone who is familiar with the trails.

I was kind of hoping someone would be going out for a ride sometime soon and I could tag along, would make for a great reason to borrow a bike from them. *cough cough*

I would feel kinda bad though, demoing a bike for a full on ride knowing I wouldn't be buying.

On that same from, I am haggling down a 2009 demo Epic I hope to snag for $2k ish, otherwise there is an 08 Epic I might pick up. Was hoping for a Stumpy.... but... know how it is buying used.

i'm not sure what bike you're looking at or you're situtation. but good luck shop around. maybe some one looking to upgrade and you'll catch a deal, but as always buy be ware

I know Fl is about as far from being a MTBike mecca as possible, but I travel a LOT for work and I intend to take some trips to the more topographically enhanced areas. I will still be here in 2 weeks and hope to be geared up by then. If you want to PM me your phone number, would be great to meet up and enjoy some of those cold weather.

I live in North Jersey but will be near ccc on Jan 23. I'm not really dialed into the local riding scene. My bro-in law road w/some locals a few years ago.

Action has a saturday road ride never been. I think there weekly mtb ride was in de, but they may have moved it

Got my bike on order. Should be here late next week - anytime after I am down to ride.
2009 Specialized Epic Expert - to say I am stoked is an understatement.

south jersey rides

They have a lot of new bridges at ceres. My delorme pn-40 helped me get around this place like never before

It's hard to tell but this single track is on a ridge with about 75 foot drop. No I didn't mtb over
