is there any lift accessed downhill in or around north carolina? i'm thinking ahead to this summer and i definately want to do a snowshoe trip but i was also wondering if any of the ski places around here did any dh in the summer?

there is hope yet

this past fall, ski scaly was sold and the new owner plans on keeping the tube run open but adding snowboarding. in the summer, they will be doing mountain boarding and downhill using the ski lift. wont be too long of a course but it would be great to see it actually work out. ski scaly is located in scaly mtn., nc which is very close to highlands. i personally know the new and old owners and they are excited about making the area into a year round venue. they are talking about putting up some cabins which will be rentals along with getting the restaurant going again. the local cycling community sure could use some bolstering and this just might do the trick.

oh wow thats still a long drive for me. i live in chapel hill. it'd be about the same time for me to drive to snowshoe as scaly. i've heard rumors of beech mountain having dh. is this true?

i don't know about beech

i don't consider myself a downhiller. don't get me wrong... i love to go down hill but what they do on ski hills scares the crap out of me. i'm more of a cross country kind of rider. i don't mind riding uphill. actually i kind of enjoy the climbs. did an 8 miler yesterday.

Sugar mountain has a 1200' vertical drop, and does lift access during the off months from July 1-Sept 3 on the weekends from 10AM to 5:30PM. Used to be $20 for an all day pass, but with the unfavorable winter conditions and them not able to have all of there runs open this winter could cause the price to go up.

Down hill in N/C ?

My wife and I just bought a house in North Carolina, Both of us ride dh and were concerned about locations to ride there. This is an exciting post for us.
So is there really stuff there? We will be living in New Bern.

I'm like 45 minutes from Ski Beech and Sugar, and I don't care if it's 50 bucks a day, I'm in....DownHill Western NC is where it's at!
