OK - I'm replacing... apparently my entire drivetrain.

And I have a simple question. I need to get my middle chainring off my M760 crankset. It almost fits over the crank spider - but I can't get it. Do I really need to remove the cranks to replace the middle chainring?

But I also think its a pretty simple operation. I am pretty sure the XT is self extracting with an 8mm allen wrench. Or as Park says one-step and no special tools.

Is the new external bearing crank set. Just remove the left arm and the driveside assembly will slide right out. You will need the little plastic tool to take out the bearing pre-load lock ring though.

what Nater said. Also you might be able to get the left side plastic nut off with your hand as its pretty much hand tightened (just loseten the two 5mm's first. I'd just try to get the tool when trying to put it back on for sure.
