I'll be in Brevard for 4 days and I've got 4-6 hours to ride Pisgah or Dupont. I'm a solid blue/black rider than doesn't mind walking the sketchiest stuff if I'm not feeling it. Looking for XC with tech but I don't want to fight the mountain. I'd say I can ride 12-25 miles depending upon difficulty. Also, chime in with dinner and lunch spots too, and great hiking trails with waterfalls.

I will make a proper trip to the area in April, 4 days with a couple buds.

Thanks!

4-6 hours, 12-25 miles, and don't want to fight the mountain? That definitely screams 'Best of Dupont' to me.
Hiking with waterfalls are there also.

You can get to a ton of cool stuff in the Ranger District off 276 with just some fire road grinding. Sit and spin type stuff. Maybe stand and mash a bit, but my fit-ish flatlander ass was able to get up without too much trouble.

I want a challenge but looking to avoid technical climbs or pain cave climbs. I'm there with the girlfriend so I need to be functional after this ride.
Those time/distance criteria in Pisgah will put you into at least one of those categories, if not both.

Dupont is where you go to throw down lots of miles with less pain.

Trace/Spencer/Fletcher up in the Mills River area would suit you. Its an easy gravel grind to single track meandering through the woods until you get to the good stuff (Spencer/Fletcher). Rinse and repeat on the climb to do Trace Ridge next. That should take about 3hrs depending on how fast you climb. All best part is you come right back to your car at the end of each lap so you don;t have to carry so much food/water with you.

Its hard to find routes with no or even little technical climbing up here. Dupont is best, or Bent Creek since its mostly flow trails with little tech.

If you want a ride with some technical climbing but a TON of downhill, I can usually do this in a few hours...

Start at the Pisgah Horse Stables and go up Clawhammer Rd/FR5058. after a mile or less, take a right onto Turkey Creek Rd/FR 5099 until it ends. Take a left, up the new Black Mtn Trail and stay on it, up and over Clawhammer MTn until you descend to Buckhorn Gap. Then continue on Black Mtn Trail toward Rich Mtn and descend into Club Gap. Continue straight onto Buckwheat Knob until you end on the gravel road (FR 477/Avery Creek Rd). Continue straight onto Bennett Gap Trail and ride that down to the same road (FR477/Avery Creek Rd).

That is the best 12-15 miles of DH in all of Pisgah. Maybe all of WNC....

Have Fun!

Have your girlfriend drop you off on the blue ridge parkway at the top of heartbreak ridge, ride down that, over to kitsuma, up kitsuma and then descend kitsuma. Have your girlfriend park at Kitsuma after she drops you off and go hiking. Don't waste your time climbing fire roads or riding horse trails at dupont.

If I recall, its bear season and that segment from Blue ridge to start of HBR is closed.

You could do some mashup of the Couch Potato race route. Cove creek loop, then do Butter Gap to Cat Gap, then maybe back down Davidson River rd/trail to Long Branch to Cat Gap. Seasonal trails are open currently, so you have those options at your disposal. There are also hiking to waterfalls in this area. The Wildlife Education Center & Fish Hatchery was destroyed by a flood, so there's limited roadside parking if you park in this area; or no parking if you don't get there early.

Closed to what? If you can bear hunt you can walk your bike from the BRP to the start of heartbreak. Its mostly a hike up anyways. Then the open field area. A hunter could use a bike so you can walk yours.

dumbass, 'cause you don't live here, you should probably shut up about this stuff.

NC state hunting regulations DO distinguish between recreational bicycle use and bicycles used to facilitate hunting.

You can find it in here. I doubt you will.

North Carolina Hunting Seasons & Rules | eRegulations

Now, Old Toll does close for bear season. It crosses onto the Montreat Conference Center private property, and this is one of their rules.

It's not a thing for Heartbreak, except that folks used to use Old Toll to get to Heartbreak more often before Ridgecrest closed their access to it.

I used to live in Brevard. I know the rules. I said he can walk his bike from the BRP to the start of heartbreak. You're allowed to walk, and push your bike. Then start riding on heartbreak. Legally. Plus you have to hike your bike up from the BRP anyways. People like you ruin the sport of mtb with your political stance on everything. Its a couple hundred feet.

You just need to shut up. You parked your van here for a few months. You didn't "live here" as you claim. And you're full of ****, anyway. The question was about the bear hunting regulations, not about walking your bike across the strip of land on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I made no political statements, unless calling you a dumbass is political now.

I lived with Dylan Johnson, in his house, in Brevard. Until I couldn't stand all the hipsters and politicians and cowboys in big trucks anymore. Plus the trails aren't that sweet, have too many rules, and too many complainers.

Maybe you should put your glasses back on. I said the OP should have his girlfriend drop him off on the BRP at the start of heartbreak. TO AVOID ANY CLOSURES.

ANOTHER POSTER SAID YOU CANT DO THAT IF ITS BEAR SEASON. I SAID YES YOU CAN, AT ANYTIME, BEAR SEASON OR NOT.

I PUT IT ALL IN CAPS SO YOU CAN READ IT BETTER.

you didn't say anything about avoiding closures until just now. nice job gaslighting.

quoted so attempts at editing your old post won't work.

he was just confused about what trail gets closed for bear season and you went off on a tangent. because you were only here for a few months sleeping on someone's couch, apparently, you didn't live here long enough to know the difference. this is why I'm telling you to stop. the route you suggested is fine, though I doubt OP's GF will be interested in shuttling him around.

Why would I need to talk about closures on something that isn't closed? And never is. And you can always walk your bike through any area that is closed to bike riding but open to hunting. Its not illegal to walk your bike, ever. Technically. Officer Harold

And this is where you are wrong. Old Toll is CLOSED to all recreational use during bear hunting season. That includes hiking, too. I didn't make the rules. The landowner did. That trail is on private land, and the landowner makes the rules.

No, it's closed to bicycles only during this time. Hiking is permitted.
