I currently have both a hardtail and a full-suspension race bike. By and large I primarily use the hardtail for racing. As good as the FS bikes have gotten the hardtails still feel to me like I get more power to the rear wheel and better handling through the turns. I use the FS in long races or races where I now that that extra suspension will outweigh the other advantages. On the other hand largely subjective

I would go hardtail, but only considering the trails I have local that I have raced on.

If I was doing a race in some other place that was heavy in rocks and roots, it would be a different story.

I am definately leaning towards a carbon hardtail. I have had full suspensions in the past, I like them, but I like the lower maintenance of the hardtails as well. I do plan on doing some races over 8, one goal is a solo 24 hour event, but I think I'd be ok on a HT.

Torn on this one as well. I'm looking forward to demoing both a Tallboy and a Carbon Flash 29er. I've got some bad back history, but I've heard good things about the Flash feeling like a softail. I'd like to get the HT if it works, cheaper, lighter, more power transfer, etc... but I don't want to get too beat up.

i just ordered it... 2011 kona hei hei 2-9, but i couldn't vote on the drivetrain because my preliminary plan is to go 3x6 (triple six... the devil's drivetrain) with a dishless hope ss/trials hub out back.
Interesting- Are you going to run the triple with normal ring combo? 42-32-22?

I also have both F/S & H/T A Big Mama at 27lbs and a Mamasita at 23lbs. the BM is to fat! the F/S frame is for sale, I'm building up another H/T I have both bikes torn down and I'm looking into new frames and I'm torned! between the sj m5 and On-One carbon race
I'm also looking at the cheep/china carbon 29er frames, I do 24 hour racing. so for me
my ultimat race bike is having two H/Ts one rigid and one with a front rock shox both having gears.
