If 3x9 crankset converted to 2x9, which front shifter range to use?

I will be replacing my M770 XT 44/32/22t crankset to the FSA Afterburner 386 40/27t (w/ megaexo BB)

I want to keep using my 3x9 XT front derailleur and shifter. So what is the best way to set it up?:

1) Preventing it from shifting to the original 44t largest chainring location (ie. using original granny and middle ring range on the front shifter)

OR

2) Preventing it from shifting down to the original 22t granny ring location (ie. using original middle and large ring range on the front shifter)

Use the small/middle clicks and set up the FD with the limit screws.
no, you should use middle to high setting. If you use small, there is too much tension in the shifter when you move up, this will screwed up your shifter.

I have not thought about this, but it makes perfect sense. I will try it after tomorrow's race.
So if you're going with a triple but dropping the big ring would you go with a 2 or 3 ring front derailleur???
